Just a week ago, Sergio García stood on the first podium of his career in Moto3. Arriving from the Grand Prix of the Americas in the Estrella Galicia 0,0 team, he missed the start of the season since he was not yet the required 16 years old. And after an encouraging first year, he managed to achieve his goal.
“It’s a great joy to achieve a podium, and even more so during the overseas tour”, did he declare. “These are difficult circuits and far from home. I think we fought a lot throughout the season, and in the end we succeeded. I would like to thank my team and my entire family. Since I didn't participate in Qatar and I hadn't made any wildcards [before], I arrived a bit blind. But finally we got there. »
It only took four races for the young Spaniard to enter the points zone, and seven to come close to the top 10. He then alternated between positive GPs and other more complicated ones before reaching a milestone from Aragón , where he continued the races in the leading group. “I arrived very motivated at each of the races. I always do it but here we also found a tune-up for the bike and we worked on my riding”, he explained.
“Little by little I progressed, I had a very good race in Japan, I had a little more difficulty in Australia but here we worked very well again and I managed to get this first podium. I was happy in Japan because finishing fifth there is incredible. It's true that I made a few beginner's mistakes but here I knew how to stay calm. Suddenly I was in front, suddenly I found myself behind, and it's very important to stay calm during these races, which are crazy. »
Currently 22nd in the Championship, García will give everything at home next week to conclude his first World Cup season in the best possible way, before turning his eyes towards 2020: “Now we must continue to work and fight for the future. I think that next year I will be more regularly at the front to fight for podiums. »
