The Spanish rider won the electric motorcycle world championship for the second consecutive season, after a breathtaking final race in Misano against Dominique Aegerter.

The electric motorcycle world championship probably couldn't have asked for a better finale. The final round of the third edition of MotoE indeed gave rise to a weekend full of twists and turns, with no less than four riders able to claim the title before it kicked off.

There was of course Alessandro Zaccone (Octo Pramac MotoE), at the top of the general classification since the start of the season, and who arrived on the Adriatic coast with a seven-point lead over his closest opponent, Eric Granado (ONE Energy Racing ).

Four for a title

But we should not exclude the title holder Jordi Torres (Pons HP 40), third and within gunshot, just as much as Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP), who had abandoned his commitment in Supersport this weekend (it is necessary say that the Swiss has a good lead in this championship) to try to play on the two tables in which he is engaged this year.

If the first day, that dedicated to free practice, seemed to turn to Granado's advantage, the Brazilian subsequently became disillusioned. First by handing over the reins to Torres, author of the E-Pole, before falling during Race 1 while fighting against the Spaniard.

The latter, who scored his first victory of the year (it was about time!), found himself propelled to the top of the championship as the final event of the season approached, facing Aegerter who had placed second. at the end of Race 1.

Granado saw his chances of winning the title very compromised, just like those of Zaccone, completely destroyed following a collision in the first lap with Hikari Okubo (Avant Ajo MotoE). The Italian was in fact excluded from the fight for the title on Saturday afternoon, forced to withdraw following this accident and the inconclusive examinations carried out at the medical center which followed.

Fight to the death between Torres and Aegerter in Race 2

The fight for the 2021 title was therefore limited to a Torres versus Aegerter duel, and the second event contested on Sunday kept all its promises. The two men in fact fought a Homeric battle throughout the eight laps of the race, crossing their trajectories on multiple occasions, in a pattern which was reminiscent, all things considered, of the duel between Marc Márquez at Valentino Rossi in Malaysia in 2015.

And as in the latter case, this opposition ended in the fall of one of the two belligerents, Torres in this case, leaving Aegerter to very temporarily take on the status of 2021 MotoE World Champion.

Because the Race Direction of course did not fail to look into the misdemeanor which the Helvetius had committed on the track, classifying the maneuver among those forming part of irresponsible piloting, and de facto penalizing him with 38 penalty seconds.

Torres was thus reintroduced at the top of the final ranking, consequently winning the grail for the second time in a row, after an improbable scenario. Enough to make the victory of Matteo Ferrari (Indonesian E-Racing Gresini MotoE), winner of the inaugural edition of the electric motorcycle championship in 2019, go almost unnoticed.
