How wonderful these nods to history are! At the Sachsenring, for the German Grand Prix MotoGP In 2026, Gresini Racing will sport a stunning livery reminiscent of the 2003 design, when the team was known as Telefonica Movistar Honda. Naturally, this evokes many memories, and it's certainly one of the most striking since it became common to see vintage liveries on modern motorcycles. A brief explanation is in order.

This livery is historic for Gresini Racing in more ways than one. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the team founded by the late Fausto is honoring the 2003 season, a particularly special year in many respects. First, It was in that year that Gresini lost its promising rider Daijiro Kato during the opening round in Japan. The Japanese rider, who died at Suzuka, was loved and adored by everyone. He was replaced by Ryuichi Kiyonari for the rest of the season, but no one has forgotten Kato, even today; his compatriot Ai Ogura, winner at Assen, still wears his number 74 on one shoulder, alongside number 48 on the other, the one chosen by the equally missed Shoya Tomizawa, who passed away in 2010.

This Movistar livery doesn't only bring back bad memories, and that's the beauty of this initiative. In 2003, the team's other rider, Sete Gibernau, was in the form of his life. Throughout the beginning of the season, he managed to hold his own against the overwhelming favorite Valentino Rossi, and he even sang the song for her… at the Sachsenring, no less! This victory by only 60 thousandths against "The Doctor" is often considered his best career win. As a result, Gresini is also celebrating this achievement, in addition to the team's 30th anniversary.

Unfortunately, only Alex Marquez will be able to ride the bike in these colors this weekend. Fermin Aldeguer, still injured following his heavy crash at Assen, is absent, but the mechanics made sure to put his bike on in the garage, as he's also part of the family. Team manager Michele Masini said he was very moved when he saw the result: "Honestly, it gives me goosebumps." he declared.
