Andrea Dovizioso, three-time world vice-champion behind Marc Marquez in MotoGP, could well make a sensational return to competition. Retired from MotoGP since the end of the 2022 season after two years at Yamaha, the 38-year-old Italian continued to be passionate about motocross. However, the idea of returning to MotoGP circuits seems more and more plausible.
With 15 MotoGP victories to his name, Dovizioso has long been a formidable adversary for Marc Marquez. During an interview with motogp.com at Mugello, Dovizioso suggested that discussions with manufacturers were ongoing: “ I don't have any plans but it's always nice when a builder calls you to talk about the future »
He went on to explain his mixed feelings about returning: “ It's something I had in mind when I decided to retire, but I wasn't ready to do anything because I wanted to stop and take a break. But I always left the door open because I'm not too old yet ».
Andrea Dovizioso: “ the door is open »
And Dovi adds: “Everyone knows my feelings which can help in developing a motorcycle. I really don't know at the moment, it's too early, but the door is open. »
The question of where Dovizioso could make his return arises immediately. Ducati seems like an obvious option, especially with the team Gresini. However, Honda could also be an interesting avenue. The Japanese manufacturer could lose Joan mir, and the future of Takaaki Nakagami is still uncertain, thus opening opportunities for an experienced pilot like Dovizioso.
While the world of MotoGP is constantly evolving, the potential return of Dovizioso could bring an exciting dynamic to the upcoming season. However, the 38-year-old Italian, who ended his career as a regular rider at the end of summer 2022 after 21 seasons in the motorcycle world championship (including 15 in the premier category), can certainly imagine working as a rider test. Could there be an opportunity for Dovizioso with his former employer Yamaha ? Time will tell...
