Raul fernandez

Raul Fernandez has won the Australian Grand Prix! It wasn't the most thrilling race of the year, that's for sure, but the Spaniard nonetheless triumphed in dominant fashion. As soon as Marco Bezzecchi served his first long penalty, no one could stop Raul from pulling away, first well ahead of Pedro Acosta, before the podium contenders changed frequently. After several years of struggle in MotoGP, he is back to life.

The Trackhouse Racing rider, who had never stood on a podium in MotoGP, described his emotions at the finish. « I think winning at Phillip Island is every driver's dream. It's a major event; I have to understand the term 'Grand Prix winner'. It's been so many years since I won, that I haven't been this competitive. First, I just didn't watch the laps. Then, I always tried to master my sectors and be as consistent as possible. In reality, on the last three or four laps, with a lead of more than three seconds, I decided to manage, catch my breath, stay calm and not make any mistakes. There was one trick that even scared me, because here, my left arm hurts a lot; I caught my breath and said to myself: let's calm down » he said for DAZN.

The conditions were particularly demanding, and, a few laps from the end, we saw him raise his hand, for a reason he explains: « With the wind, I couldn't grab the handlebars. When I took out a tear-off, I tried to get it out and put my hand back in. Between that and the fact that I was in a bit of pain, it was difficult. With four laps to go, I was at my wit's end, I didn't want to make a mistake, and it happenedThe hand problem happened to me, I caught my breath and all I could think about was surviving. he continued.

Raul Fernandez, who had an excellent rookie season in Moto2 in 2021, has struggled a lot since joining MotoGP at the start of 2022, at KTM Tech3 alongside Remy Gardner. « Finally, there was a moment when the question was not whether to continue in MotoGP, but rather to be happy, and I was not having a good time.. That's where the human side of the team comes in, my chief mechanic, my family. I remember my chief mechanic and my coach that we hired after the race in Jerez. It was a difficult time for me. I couldn't even get up in the morning with a smile, and I think that's the most important thing in life, and I didn't do it. From that moment on, they helped me; they gave me peace of mind, David too, my family too, you know what sport is; you have to build the foundations, and starting little by little, it's like building a house. The faster you try to build it, the faster it gets destroyed, so we decided to start building the foundations little by little, and honestly, without thinking that this moment could come this year » he concluded.
