Brad Binder can be both satisfied and disappointed by a first season in MotoGP tackled with the official KTM suit. The South African has already won a Grand Prix in the category, a doubly historic moment since, at the same time, it allowed KTM to record its first success in MotoGP. But he also fell a lot and missed the top 10 that was promised to him overall. Still rookie of the year, he admits to keeping an eye on Moto3, the situation of which he deplores...
Brad Binder is in fact a former World Champion of Moto3, a category that he continues to follow even more than his turbulent brother Darryn joust there. And this is not an empty word in this furious melee whose results do not depend only on the dexterity of the pilot to escape from it. But also very regularly imposed penalties.
Increasingly heavy sanctions but which still fail to dissuade the protagonists from staying on the right path. Or, at least within the limits of the track. A recurring event which is added to qualifying time, when groups of drivers wander like lost souls on the tarmac, looking for the right aspiration, to find inspiration.
A situation that does not increase the category. Brad Binder regrets it, but also admits not knowing the solution that would resolve this recurring problem: “ To be honest, I don't know what to say about it “, comments the 25-year-old Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider. “IIt's important that drivers don't do anything stupid on the track. But I don't know if it makes sense for the stewards to sanction 15 drivers per Grand Prix with the "long lap" penalty, or even a double ».
Brad Binder regrets but offers nothing
« In the Moto3 world championship, teams spend a lot of money so that riders can do good laps” he recalls on speedweek. But then the officials give them countless penalties, including starting grid sanctions, which ruin their chances in the race. Sometimes I think every now and then young drivers get caught up in the action when three or four guys do something stupid. I think there shouldn't be so many sanctions».
Sure, but Brad Binder does not have the solution to resolve the problem either: “ it's difficult. What more can you do? The problem was there when I was still in Moto3. These punishments have existed for more than five years, but they are getting out of control. I don't want to see 15 guys on the long lap penalty every Sunday. As long as Moto3 has these important advantages in a draw, there will be people who want to gain an advantage through it in qualifying. ».
It will be recalled that the younger brother of Brad Binder, first name Darryn, won the round of the Moto3 World Championship in Catalonia in 2020 and reached second place during Aragon-1, with a KTM from CIP Green Power Team. He finished eighth in the general classification in the category. In 2021, the same Darryn will be a driver of the team Petronas Sprinta Honda, as a teammate of John mcphee.
