The 2019 MotoGP season has barely ended and the riders are already looking ahead to 2020. It is still a good idea to take a look back to learn from your mistakes, to put build on its successes in order to prepare well for the future. Cal Crutchlow took part in this exercise, taking stock of his past season, and the upcoming one which could be the last before he ends his career as a certain Jorge Lorenzo did recently…

In 2020, it will be 10 years since Cal Crutchlow officiates in MotoGP. After the latest events, following the announcement of the retirement of Jorge Lorenzo, the Briton is trying to follow the same path as the Majorcan. The idea is gaining ground and could well become a reality in 2021.

« As you all know, I'm going to race next year. Maybe this will be my last contract, maybe I will retire later” explained the Coventry pilot.

But rumors about the withdrawal of Cal Crutchlow have always been relevant. “ Two years ago, when I signed for the renewal of my current contract, I already understood that at some point I had to think about stopping. So this is something to think about. Maybe next year I'll win the first five races and then decide to move on or say that's enough » he says.

For now, the LCR driver is recovering physically from the falls he suffered this season, to start 2020 as fit as possible. We must not forget that the 34-year-old driver has suffered a series of injuries which may influence his choice to leave competition, the most serious being that of Phillip Island in 2018.

A month ago, Jorge Lorenzo announced that he had chosen to retire after his heavy fall at Assen. A situation which reminded Crutchlow, a state of mind that was his in 2018 after his fall at Philipp Island. “ When he fell and he told himself later, now enough is enough… I understand Jorge Lorenzo on this. When I fell hard last year, it was the same for me. » Even if the LCR Honda rider still decided to continue the MotoGP adventure.

However, Cal explains that he identifies more with Marc Marquez that Jorge Lorenzo in being tough on evil. “ When I fell at that moment, I also had the feeling “this is ridiculous”. Because an hour later, I was already preparing my return to Valencia. Obviously it was impossible, but in my head I wanted to go back. Marc (Márquez) looks more like me. With someone more sensitive like Jorge it’s even different” concludes the teammate of Takaaki Nakagami, still convalescing, and replaced during the last three races of the season by John Zarco.
