Jorge Martin looked set for a great weekend at the San Marino Grand Prix after his commanding victory in the Sprint Race. However, in the main race his decision to switch bikes to wet weather tyres proved costly. As the rain began to fall Martin gambled on the showers intensifying but the weather soon eased forcing him to switch back to slicks, losing valuable time and finishing a disappointing 15th.
Despite the sand, George Martin remains leader of the championnat, but its lead over Francis Bagnaia and Ducati official has melted to only Sept points. This strategic error has attracted criticism, particularly from Carlo Pernat, a well-known MotoGP expert, and also manager ofEnea Bastianini, who shared his opinion with GPOne.com. According to him, Martin made a mistake that could have been avoided:
« Martin had an inconceivably bad day. With a 26-point lead and his direct rival, Bagnaia, just ahead of him, he made a big error of judgment. ».
Carlo Pernat: “ The best strategy for Jorge Martin would have been to follow Pecco Bagnaia's decisions »
He adds : " The best strategy would have been to follow Pecco's decisions. This lack of mental clarity is worrying at this level of competition. He was perfect in the Sprint, but such a mistake in a race is not even seen in the CIV, the Italian Championship. That said, Martin stay strong, and the title is still within reach »
This strategic choice highlights the pressure and difficulty of managing crucial decisions under unpredictable weather conditions, especially in such a tight fight for the world championship this season. tension between pilots Ducati in MotoGP.
A flag-to-flag strategy that went completely wrong for the Championship leader! 😱@ 88jorgemartin entered pitlane too early and as it stopped raining he had to pit in once again for a second bike-swap which relegated him to P16! 🤯#SanMarinoGP 🇸🇲 pic.twitter.com/cmigKgNQi3
