The world motorcycle championship is constantly evolving. MotoGP organizer Dorna and its top representative Carlos Ezpeleta are considering reducing the number of teams in Moto2 in order to concentrate resources and better feed the premier class.

The motorcycle world championship, structured around the categories Moto3, Moto2 et MotoGP, could soon experience major changes. Carlos Ezpeleta, sports director of Dorna Sports, revealed the intention to gradually reduce the number of teams in Moto2 in order to concentrate more resources on the premier class, MotoGP.

Currently, Moto2 has 30 riders spread across 15 teams, while MotoGP is limited to 22 drivers on 11 teamsThis imbalance could be corrected in the coming years.

« One thing is clear: We hold the three categories of the World Championship in high esteem", said on speedweek Carlos Ezpeleta. " At the same time, by focusing on MotoGP, we must pursue the goal of reducing Moto2 and integrating it into the context of Moto3. We are talking about a long-term adjustment to get closer to MotoGP's vision of the future"

Ezpeleta specified that the objective would be to limit Moto2 to 12 teams and 24 riders. However, he stressed that this reduction will not be done in a hurry. A short-term reduction is not in our interest“, he asserted. " We are aware economic implications and jobs at stake"

Carlos Ezpeleta, Dorna: " It is more important than ever to avoid scandals and maintain exemplary management »

For the moment, Dorna does not accept new teams in any category. The organization wants to stabilize the existing field before considering any expansion.

« We are constantly receiving requests for new teams for all classes“, he explained. “ But it is also true that if one of the existing teams is no longer able to compete in the season according to the criteria in force, We are currently unable to offer any financial support"

Carlos Ezpeleta recalled that Dorna does not have the final say regarding the management of the Moto2 and Moto3 teams. This responsibility falls to IRTA association, which oversees a selection committee tasked with evaluating teams' performance and viability each season.

« In terms of strategy, we are on an equal footing with IRTA and in regular contact with the selection committee. The whole situation is discussed here. The team association decides which team remains in the paddock.“, He clarified.

This restructuring will involve increased competition between teams, which will have to prove their economic viability and their ability to self-finance. Ezpeleta concluded by warning against bad practices: “ It is more important than ever to avoid scandals and maintain exemplary management. If a team stumbles, it will be difficult to find help to pick it up again.. »

With this upcoming reform, Dorna hopes to strengthen the competitiveness of MotoGP while ensuring a more stable and attractive future for the entire motorcycle world championship.
