After five Grands Prix and therefore ten races in this new MotoGP format, rookie Augusto Fernandez is on the honor roll. Especially after a last French Grand Prix where he literally finished at the foot of the podium, allowing himself to keep Aleix Espargaró in check who was full of praise for him after this duel at Le Mans. He is not the only one to have spotted the new recruit at Tech3 GASGAS. A trajectory that was certainly not obvious at the start of this campaign, but the fact is there: no one anymore doubts the value of the reigning Moto2 World Champion.

And at Tech3, last year, we saw some big names from the previous seasons in Moto2. In 2022, Remy gardner was the reigning crowned one, and at his side stood his dolphin Raul fernandez. And it went badly. But what do we see in 2023? Raul fernandez struggles with physical problems and has still not demonstrated his peak speed, while Remy gardner is regularly dominated in his new WSBK environment by his teammate Dominique Aegerter, just as new since coming from the WSS… Which puts things into perspective. The fact remains that we did not give much of the fate ofAugusto Fernandez from the start of this season because of this past experience, and also because he was considered the one who was there to warm up the place at Peter Acosta.

A general consideration of which Augusto Fernandez was conscious, which makes his journey thus far all the more remarkable. The Spaniard has scored points in each of Sunday's five races so far. He is 14th overall with 30 World Championship points. Last year's Moto2 world champion achieved his best performance in the premier class at Le Mans. After qualifying for Q2 on Saturday and placing his red RC16 in 12th place on the grid, he fought to gain 4th place on Sunday. He left all the KTM riders behind.

Augusto Fernandez: “ Rossi is an idol, but Marc Marquez is the best »

Aleix Espargaró, who finished half a second behind the GASGAS Tech3 commented upon arrival: “ Augusto's race was great, congratulations to him. It's one thing to start from the front, but another to pass the KTMs and show such a solid pace ". The pilot Aprilia added : " if you want to maintain your position here, you must fight like a lion. He's doing it in a team where we know what they did to their former rookie drivers. His situation is not easy but he works hard and he is deservedly the Moto2 World Champion. What Augusto Fernandez has done so far is really great ».

alex rins think of him too: after Jerez, I must say that Pedrosa, without having the pace of the competition, surprised me by showing incredible results. But there is another one we don't talk about much and that is Augusto Fernandez. He regularly scores points in his first MotoGP races ».

Augusto Fernandez therefore increases in power. “ Rossi is an idol, but Marc Marquez is the best » he said. He also admits this: “ I always said that once my motorcycle career is over, I would like to go to F1. This is my dream. A bit like Valentino, who after doing everything on a motorbike has fun in the car. One day I'd like to change and race cars ". But before that, you have to build a career in MotoGP. And the guy takes care of it well.
