Marc Marquez

Honda driver Marc Marquez has spent the last two years of his life in the operating room and wonders if he will be able to race at his former level again. Now, after his latest surgery, he's starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, even though the road hasn't been easy.

Marc Marquez continues with the recovery of his right arm. Seriously injured on July 19, 2020, during the Jerez Grand Prix, the eight-time champion has been on the tightrope for two years with a rhythm of one step forward and two steps back at each stage of his convalescence.

The last name Marquez could well be followed by the word "resilience", because the road, and the one that remains, until his arm is fully recovered, has been and remains arduous. With endless ups and downs, from the occult to doubts about whether the pilot Honda could run again. During these two years, Marc himself doubted the relevance of his choices, forcing a situation that, perhaps, had no solution. But fortunately, and after his latest operation, it seems that the road is starting to open for the man from Cervera. Thomas Morsellino, however, recalled Autohebdo.fr the precise chronology of the hazards encountered by the Spanish champion.

Marc Marquez: timeline of a never-ending recovery

Just two days after his fall, Marc underwent surgery for a fracture of his right humerus. 48 hours later, he went to Jerez to compete in the Andalusian Grand Prix. On July 25, he got back on the bike, this time during free practice 3 of the Andalusian Grand Prix. The next day, after completing six laps during free practice 4, Marc and his team decided that it was better to abandon this comeback attempt and that the recovery should be slower.

Just a week and a half later, on August 3, the team HRC Honda confirm that Marquez underwent a second operation because the titanium plate placed on his arm had suffered excessive stress. The recovery should be longer and calmer. For the man from Cervera, the 2020 world championship would end there.

In December, on the eve of the start of 2021, Marc Marquez undergoes another operation, the third. After eight hours in the operating room, the Catalan pilot had the titanium plate replaced and, in addition, a bone graft was performed on the humerus. A few days later, an infection was detected in the fracture, for which he had to spend a little more time in the hospital.

In April 2021, Marc confirmed his presence for the Algarve Grand Prix, in Portimao. A physically demanding circuit but in which he had an excellent weekend, qualifying in sixth position and finishing the race, without incident, in seventh place. Already in June and after having come close to victory at Le Mans, Marquez returned to the summit in his garden: the Sachsenring. It seemed that everything was gradually returning to its place and that Marc was regaining confidence with the bike. Unfortunately, and despite winning three races in 2021, Marc is forced to not finish the season due to a new episode of diplopia, an injury that was first caused at Sepang 2011.

Already this year, the Honda rider started the world championship normally, although a crash in Indonesia awakened his double vision problems again. After missing two races, he seems ready to return. However, shortly after, he released a statement announcing that he would undergo surgery again to stabilize his battered arm. The operation was carried out on June 3 and proved to be a complete success. To this day, and after his four operations and episodes of double vision, Marc remains hopeful and strong to continue his convalescence and be able to return to the circuits as quickly as possible.
