Directly after the Doha Grand Prix in Qatar, three representatives from Dorna and the FIM traveled to Indonesia, more specifically to the Mandalika circuit, to conduct a pre-track inspection before the homologation of the circuit which will be carried out in July 2021.

Carlos Ezpeleta (Executive Director of Dorna Sports), Loris Capirossi (driver representative at Dorna) and Franco Uncini (responsible for safety for the FIM) were thus able to judge the progress of the work, in the presence of the local authorities, that those -these concern the Mandalika circuit or the Bandara International Lombok airport.

Indeed, it is in the process of being enlarged in order to accommodate the four Boeing 747-400s which transport the 370 tonnes of material necessary for the smooth running of a Grand Prix.

“We are currently working on extending the runway from 2750 meters to 3300 meters as well as increasing the load capacity of the runways in order to support the operations of large B777 class aircraft and cargo aircraft. MotoGP logistics », explained Nugroho Jati, the airport director. “The runway project had an initial target of completion in September 2021, but we are trying to accelerate it so that it can be completed in May 2021. After verification by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, it is hoped that the 3 300 meters will be operational by June 2021.”

Even if the work on the new circuit is currently around 60% complete, Dorna Sports says it is satisfied with the current conditions.

“Of course, everyone knows that there is still a lot to do… But we are looking forward to seeing MotoGP here and we are sure that the MotoGP riders will enjoy it”, said Carlos Ezpeleta.

For the moment, the Indonesian Grand Prix is on the 2021 MotoGP calendar without a specific date, as a reserve Grand Prix.
