Luca Marini regrets having made a string of bad decisions during the French GP, even though he had initially made the same choice as Johann Zarco, who won.
Amid the chaos of the French Grand Prix, it was necessary to make the right decisions, to play a gamble, and to avoid making any mistakes. Some succeeded, like Johann Zarco, who went to win at home after an incredible scenario, taking him from almost last at the start of the race to the winner with a 20-second lead. Others had made good choices but went wrong. And then there are those who didn't make mistakes on the track but didn't make the right decisions, like Luca Marini.
The Italian driver was among those, like Johann Zarco, who stayed on the starting grid with wet tires and therefore did not receive two long laps for changing at the last minute. However, he returned to the pits on the second lap to change tires, convinced that the conditions would improve. This error forced him to return to the wet tires six laps later and cost him precious time.
Marini thus crossed the finish line in 11th place with the disappointment of having missed a great opportunity given what Johann Zarco had achieved. "First of all, congratulations to Honda and Zarco for the result, we all worked very hard to achieve it.", did he declare. "Today there was a great opportunity and, honestly, I'm really frustrated because I made almost every decision wrong. It's a real shame."
“Of course, after the race it’s easy to say that staying on wet tires would have been best. I had a very good start and we were fast, but the weather was very changeable. Once everything stabilized, I had a good feeling and I was able to be quite fast, but we lost too much time with the tire changes. Without those mistakes, Zarco showed that it was possible.”
