The coronavirus has caused MotoGP to fall into an artificial coma, promising a difficult awakening. When he emerges from confinement, he will indeed discover an economically devastated world with new essential priorities. A scale of value which will also be his own. Survival will be the goal to achieve and for this, every resource will have to be optimized. Engineer Gigi Dall'Igna from a Ducati factory shaken like the others by this pandemic announces the end of recess and gives an idea of what the return to school will be like...

Gigi Dall'Igna is an engineer and, in fact, he is by nature against regulations restricting imagination and budget cuts slowing down innovations. But this time, the situation is serious, so serious in fact, that he puts his convictions in his pocket with a handkerchief on top: “ we are facing a major catastrophe. The world of two wheels in general will surely suffer a lot from this crisis and it is clear that all the ideas that will allow us to limit costs will have to be implemented. “, said the Venetian engineer in an interview with La Stampa.

« I am a technician, I like to progress. In the past I have always opposed any proposals that could limit development, but now things are totally different " did he declare. " Our future will involve cost reduction. »

Ducati has endorsed the idea of riding in 2021 with the 2020 motorcycles and the development freeze engines like that of aerodynamic studies. But the Borgo Panigale brand wants to go even further: “ I am thinking of using only one motorcycle per rider in MotoGP » he blurted. “ For the moment we are the only category to have two and it does not seem to me that in the others, from Moto3 to SBK, the spectacle is less. Having one less motorcycle would lead to significant savings, starting with spare parts, not only for manufacturers but especially for independent teams. »

An idea to explore in a context where another is also developing: that of only four mechanics per motorcycle.
