The Grand Prix MotoGP The Hungarian round, the eighth of the 2026 season, may well be remembered as a turning point for Luca marinibecause aAfter a difficult Friday and a mediocre sprint race, the Honda HRC Castrol rider was able to take advantage of a chaotic start on Sunday to secure 5th place, thus equaling his best result since joining the Japanese manufacturer.
A look back at a weekend in three acts on the winding Balaton Park track.
Friday: a tiny gap, Q1 in sight
From the very first practice sessions, the tone was set. While Luca Marini was eighth in the morning session, the afternoon session revealed an incredibly tight field. The Italian improved his time by almost half a second (1'37.949), but found himself trapped outside the top 10, less than two tenths of a second away from provisional Q2. Half a second separated tenth from nineteenth, making every detail crucial.
Marini's analysis is straightforward: “We arrived with positive intentions, but we encountered the same situation as in previous races: we can’t exploit the soft tire and the time attack like the others. We reached our maximum today; now we need to focus on modifications by tomorrow morning to try and get out of Q1.” The goal is clear: to find that last little spark during the night.
Saturday: Brilliance in Qualifying 1, a shadow in the Sprint
The behind-the-scenes work is paying off. In Q1, Luca marini He executes the perfect lap at the opportune moment, alone on the track while others seek a tow. His 1:37.594 opens the doors to Q2, where he secures 9th place on the grid, equaling his best qualifying result of the season. This result places him on the third row and restores his confidence. "It's positive to have made it through Q1 today; we managed to put together a good lap at the right time. It's the first time this year I've felt this strong in qualifying."
Unfortunately, the morning's promises were not fulfilled in the afternoon. The start of the sprint race was not perfect, and number 10 found himself battling with Diogo Moreira and Enea Bastianini, Then Fabio DiGiannantonioLacking grip and cornering speed compared to the morning, he finished 12th, outside the points, 6 seconds and 5 places behind the rookie. Diogo Moreira.
"We need to understand how to improve grip and handling for tomorrow, and choose the right tire depending on the temperature.", he summarizes, aware that heat management will be crucial for the 26 laps on Sunday.
Sunday: a daunting start, a triumphant finale
Sunday's race turned on its head at the very first corner. A pile-up involving several favorites propelled both factory Hondas into the top 10. Luca marini avoids the debris and immediately gives chase Jack MillerOnce the Australian driver was overtaken, the Italian fixed his gaze on third place. Pecco Bagnaia, several seconds apart. He's closing the gap, but quickly has to contend with a Ai Ogura came back like a shot in the final laps.
Despite a vigorous defense, the Italian eventually succumbed to the Japanese rider and crossed the finish line in 5th position, equaling his best result with Honda and his third top-five finish on the RC213V. This result allows him to close the gap to just seven points behind. Fermin Aldeguer to the championship and to get closer to the world's top 10.
Relieved and realistic, he confided after the finish: “It was another dramatic race. You always take a lot of risks in the first corner, and this time I was able to capitalize on it, but I hope all the other riders are okay. The setup changes made overnight improved the bike, and our race was good. Of course, we were helped by the situation at the start, but I think we could have made up ground anyway. I tried everything to regain the advantage over Ogura at the end, without success. These are still good championship points; we need to focus on that and come back strong in the next two races.”
With this performance in Hungary, Luca Marini proves that despite recurring difficulties in qualifying and sprinting, consistency and opportunism can ultimately pay off.
Before tackling the double-header at Brno and Assen, the Honda HRC Castrol rider racked up a a dose of confidence all the more precious because Diogo Moreira push at the gate…
