You are probably aware that MotoGP will change significantly in 2027. We have already explained the different measures to you ; the most important one is, without a doubt, the reduction of the cylinder capacity from 1000cc to 850cc. While we focus on the 2025 season, the teams are working hard to take as little delay as possible. The coming months are crucial, and will determine, in some cases, the long-term future of the manufacturers present in the premier class. Precisely, various KTM engineers talk about the progress of the future project, which could see the light of day sooner than you imagine.
It's not just 2025 that matters. Now that engine development is frozen for two years, KTM, Aprilia and Ducati can do more focus on 2027. Some questions remain, such as power. Would a 15% drop in displacement be proportional to the number of horses lost? Not for Sebastian Risse, head of KTM technology on the racetrack. In an interview with speedweek, he says more: « It is impossible to make such generalizations.. With this new regulation, other aspects come into play, the objectives are different. We have to determine the extent to which peak performance is important in relation to the power curve – and other aspects. I think there will be 10 to 12% less performance.. In the best case, it will exceed 300 horsepower.".

As a reminder, the power of MotoGP 800cc (2007-2012) was rated at around 220 horsepower. So chances are that on screen, the speed difference will be barely noticeable. KTM has a plan: to get the 2027 prototype running this year. « We will remain faithful to the V4, and the development of this engine is well advanced.. Our goal is clear: to put the bike on the track this year. But first, we need to put the engine on a test bench; the others have already started, or if they haven't, they won't be long" he added.
The V4 seems like an obvious choice: everyone is getting involved, including Yamaha, historically loyal to the inline four. KTM engine designer Kurt Trieb never doubted for a second about the architecture to adopt. « For me, the V4 is the ideal solution in MotoGP. But I find it impressive what my colleagues at Yamaha have managed to get out of the inline four. These different concepts often reach the same level." he concluded.
