Maverick Viñales leaves the first round of the MotoGP season in Jerez with mixed feelings. Certainly, he held his place, of course he showed that he could finally lead a race from the given start, but he was beaten by the satellite Yamaha driven by his future teammate in 2021, Fabio Quartararo. Likewise, he would not have resisted Marc Marquez, evolving in another space-time before his fall. He therefore knows that he cannot be satisfied with what remains a good result with a view to the championship. This weekend, he does it again on the same circuit, but with acquired knowledge with which he intends to make the difference this time…
Maverick Vinales wants to be the leader at Yamaha but after the Spanish Grand Prix which inaugurated the 2020 MotoGP season, he is the second of fabio quartararo, equipped with the same M1 as him, but in colors Petronas. A situation with which he obviously cannot be satisfied. However, he thought he had done the hardest part from the exit of the first turn once the start had been given... “ When I saw that I was the first, I said to myself: “ Now it's OK ! »I set a good pace from the start and set my best time on the first lap, which was interesting. I was able to give my best at the start, it was very important for us ».
« I wanted to create a gap, but I made big mistakes. On the first lap I almost flew into turn 8 doing a highside. Then, on the seventh or eighth lap of Turn 6, I almost slid off the front wheel. I knew then that I was in trouble. My front tire was gone, which was a shame because I felt really good on the bike. But that's how races go, the important thing was to go to the end. A second place is 20 points, which is very good for the championship. Now we have a second race here in Jerez, where we can improve ».
Marc Marquez also showed things
Maverick Vinales explains its expected margin of progress as follows: “ we understood a lot of things in the race, especially regarding electronics and settings. We will definitely take a step forward for the next race, that's for sure. We understood that the soft tire can be good for the first part of the race, but it becomes more difficult in the last part. We definitely learned a lot and we will be at a better level this weekend ". Who will be the one from Andalusia on the same route of Jerez.
Maverick Vinales also recognizes that he learned from his adversaries: “ when Marc Márquez passed me I saw a lot of things we needed to improve on the bike, especially for the race », concludes the teammate of Valentino Rossi. " In the fourth sector, I was able to make up all the delay. I understand very well where we need to improve. We will work very hard to improve this weekend ».
