Matthew Birt took stock of Yamaha racing with Jorge Lorenzo as to the fact that the latter, MotoGP test rider for the brand with three tuning forks, could very well not make any of the three wild cards envisaged this year in Barcelona, Misano and Motegi. This doesn't seem to disappoint the Mallorcan champion too much...

Jorge Lorenzo : “well, I'm worried but I'm not too worried because I'm just taking this job as a hobby! I love riding and I think it was a good opportunity to continue riding a motorcycle, and at the same time to give something back to the brand that allowed me to arrive in MotoGP and that provided three world titles. But what happened happened and if I never have to do this job again in the future, I'll be OK the same way. Of course, I would like to continue being a test rider for Yamaha but it's something that doesn't keep me up at night. Obviously, I would like the situation to improve for everyone, from a health point of view, but also in terms of being able to drive. But I don't know if I will be able to do a race without having tested before the race, as I planned to do in Montmeló.

Asked about a possible full-time return in 2021, Por Fuera does not feel the need.

“Honestly, I didn't make the decision to race in Montmeló to test myself as a driver, nor to understand where I would feel if I could return to competition. I think I've closed that chapter of my life, at least for now. Currently, I don't feel the need for it. Maybe it will come back, because you never know in life. »

At this moment, Jorge Lorenzo is interrupted by Ben Spies who laughingly tells him that he doesn't believe for a single second that he didn't choose Montmeló to make his wildcard because he was particularly fast there, and that it wasn't just for fun.

The American specifies: “that would have been huge!” Jorge and I talk a little. It had been maybe a month or two since we last spoke together and then we took stock of several things. The day he got on the Yamaha was one of those things and I sent him a message in an Instagram story, in which I simply said that he looked like he was immediately at home! He looked exactly like he was between 2011 and 2015. You can only tell when he's comfortable, you know, when he tilts his head in the corners or that kind of style, and it just immediately came back to him on the Yamaha. So since it's for fun, wildcards or that sort of thing, if there had been a series of tests and he had been in Catalonia, he would have been far from slow! So for sure it would have been fun to watch. »

As a reminder, the Grand Prix Commission suspended all wildcards for the 2020 season at the beginning of May.
