The transfer market is also a subject for energy suppliers in MotoGP which it has become politically incorrect to identify under the name of tanker. And for good reason: with the arrival of e-fuels from 2024, we must think more about green ecology than black gold. A change which leads to new partnerships, as shown by the KTM factory which will no longer display Motorex on the bottom of the fairings of its RC16 but Mobil 1.

A transfer market in the Grand Prix paddock concerns drivers, mechanics and team chiefs, helmets, combinations, the exhausts and also the gasoline that we put in the tanks. The proof with this announcement of KTM which specifies that Mobil 1 is now a partner. The company, which is part of the ExxonMobil group, will take care of the development of new gasoline for the RC16, as well as the supply of lubricants.

New gasoline? Indeed, the technical challenge that awaits the engineers of the MotoGP is the arrival of e-fuels, that is to say synthetic fuels, eliminating the fossil origin like gasoline. According to the regulations adopted, in 2024, in the three classes of the world championship, the engines will have to burn fuels that claim at least 40% of synthetic fuels to achieve 100% in 2027.

Pete Beirer, director of KTM Motorsports, explained: “ this collaboration is important to us for several reasons. ExxonMobil is a big name in industry and motorsports, very present in racing, and we know that we can count on their high-end lubricants for our RC16. They have a similar mentality to us when it comes to striving for the highest level and best performance and this is also reflected in our goals for the future: we really want to be part of this change in MotoGP sustainability with fuels. We look forward to representing Mobil Lubricants in MotoGP competition ».

The challenge to produce the best synthetic fuel began in MotoGP

Rob Shearer , ExxonMobil's Global Head of Sponsorships and Motorsport, added: “ This is an exciting new partnership for Mobil 1 and we look forward to developing a long and successful relationship with a brand as illustrious, dynamic and innovative as KTM. Our role will be to provide state-of-the-art fuels and lubricants and we hope KTM can give us some victories. What is certain, however, is that ultimately it will be the consumer who wins, as we refine and improve the products we supply around the world. Today's announcement allows us to continue showcasing our advanced performance lubrication technologies. With the season opener in Portugal fast approaching, we look forward to partnering with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and riders such as Brad Binder and Jack Miller ».

We will recall that KTM is a fervent defender of synthetic fuel, opposing electric propulsion. The partner Tech3 which will fly the GASGAS flag this season is allied with Elf while Honda does not have to procrastinate on this front, the issue of the new fuel being the core business of its main investor Repsol.
