In 2024, MotoGP™ will transition to sustainable fuels, launching a new global era of carbon-free fuels.

The FIM Grand Prix World Championship, MotoGP™, is a global platform that has the capacity to drive the evolution of the motorcycle and mobility industries. With a unique position as one of the most popular and technologically advanced sports in the world, MotoGP™ is a racing “laboratory” fueled by innovation and development.

Global motorcycle sales stand at 60 million units per year and mobility on two wheels is a necessity for a huge portion of the population, with more than two billion motorcycles on the world's roads. In many countries, two-wheeled vehicles are the lifeblood of society. As the most sustainable motorized vehicles, mobility on two wheels plays a vital role in the quest for cleaner, safer and more environmentally friendly mobility, with the power to make an incredible contribution to the need for the world to reduce carbon emissions, increase sustainability and combat climate change.

In collaboration with MotoGP™ manufacturers, the sport has set new goals for increased sustainability:

By 2024, the fuel in all MotoGP™ categories will be of at least 40% non-fossil origin.
By 2027, fuel in all MotoGP™ categories will be 100% non-fossil sourced.

MotoGP™ is the platform on which these fuels will continue to be developed and tested, with each premier class manufacturer working with their supplier to develop their own fuel. The development of multiple fuels will ensure that technology and knowledge reaches consumers' motorcycles and fuel pumps on the street. The result will be an unrivaled selection of viable and sustainable fuels, developed by some of the world's largest energy players and tested by the highest level of prototype two-wheeled machines in the world. With no single owner, the initiative ensures unprecedented global impact.

These fuels of the future can be used in a standard internal combustion engine and will either be created in the laboratory, using components from a carbon capture system, or derived from municipal waste or non-food biomass, which will allow significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil gasoline. In addition, fuel suppliers will gradually introduce the use of renewable energy in the production of their fuel.

The Moto2™ and Moto3™ categories will continue to be supplied by a single fuel supplier and will also introduce partially sustainable fuel in 2024. Both categories will transition to 100% sustainable fuel in 2027, alongside the MotoGP™ category.

The FIM, IRTA, MSMA, Dorna and all stakeholders are committed to creating a more sustainable sport and future, from engineering greater sustainability on the track to assessing and reducing of the carbon footprint of every event and aspect of sport with innovative solutions.

MotoGP™ races together to fuel global innovation, creating and reflecting positive change.

We really want to show all motorcycle manufacturers that it is possible to have fun the way we all love it, but with sustainable fuels. We hope that by 2027 our competitions will run on XNUMX% carbon-free fuels, leading the way and showing that while racing only accounts for a small portion of emissions, we must be leaders in this. change and lead the way. Thanks to all stakeholders for the negotiations, we can finally announce the good news. »
