Roser Alentà, Marc Márquez's mother, looked back on the "very painful" period experienced by number 93 and his family between 2020 and 2023.
The mother of the Márquez brothers was interviewed at length on the Spanish program The Width at the finish of the Thailand Grand Prix. If she returned to the pain he feels seeing his sons take part in the races, she also confided about the long convalescence that she experienced Marc Márquez between 2020 and 2023, and which saw the eight-time World Champion sidelined on several occasions due to his various injuries.
“It was very hard. For him first, but also for those around him. When we saw him sinking, we had to take the lead and tell him, ‘Come on, Marc, it’s going to be okay, we can recover from anything with effort, you’ll see.’ But it broke my heart to see him like that. It was very long and very painful, for him of course, but also for me as a mother and for the whole family. In the end, the efforts are rewarded, he’s happy.”, she said.
The end of his recovery coincided with his decision to leave Honda after 11 seasons together in MotoGP to join the Gresini satellite team. A career choice that is paying off today as he now rides for the official Ducati team, but it was a risky one at the time. Once the shock wore off, Roser Alentà admits that her son's career choices didn't matter to her and that, as a mother, she simply wanted to see him happy again.
“When he told me he was leaving Honda for Gresini, I said to him, ‘What?! How are you going to do it?’ He replied, ‘What do you prefer: for your son to be happy or for the contracts and the money?’ I told him [that I preferred] for him to be happy and to see him smile again. […] Last year when he got on the podium, even when he finished fourth or fifth I didn’t care, I swear I cried with emotion for him, knowing that he was happy again.”, she concluded.
