You just have to listen to it for a few seconds to realize that Franco Morbidelli is different from other MotoGP riders. In impeccable and particularly well-articulated English, the Italian always expresses himself with great calm, which allows him to convey his thoughts clearly to his interlocutors.
But the Petronas Yamaha SRT rider is also of great intellectual honesty, rarely hiding behind “corporate” language, even on thorny subjects.
After obtaining the place of vice-world champion last season, “Franky” had a difficult start to the year, no longer recognizing his Yamaha which was so homogeneous in 2020. But, little by little, the number 21 is gaining strength and, after a blank result in Qatar, a 12th place in Doha and a 4th in Portugal, it is his first podium of the year that Franco Morbidelli obtained in Jerez, on the third step.
An upward curve which could continue at Le Mans... if the weather had not predicted to water the Sarthe track.
If these predictions are confirmed, Franco Morbidelli leaves his supporters with little hope, and when a journalist asks him at a press conference if his chances of victory would be greater in the wet, the spearhead of the Malaysian team does not not in half measure...
Franco Morbidelli : “Unfortunately, and honestly, because I have never been very fast in the wet. I try to be fast but for some reason I never have been. During my career, I made a podium in the wet, and after that, it never happened again. So it would be a chance to try to improve in the wet and a chance to try to see if what we did in the test in Jerez also works in the wet. It would also be helpful to have a good result but my expectations are not higher if it rains, unfortunately. Or luckily, I don’t know! »
Franco Morbidelli is currently 8th in the championship, with 33 points.
