The director of the Jerez circuit, Cayetano Gómez, discusses the postponement of the MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix to a still unknown date and clears up a misunderstanding regarding the possible refund of tickets.

Cayetano Gomez, director of the Jerez circuit, appeared last Sunday on Spanish radio Onda Cero to talk about the Spanish Grand Prix. The first meeting of the European season, initially scheduled for May 3, has been postponed to an indefinite date due to the expansion of the coronavirus which is affecting the entire world.

Postponement or cancellation? The ball is clearly in Dorna’s case…

Cayetano Gomez : “The initiative belongs to Dorna, who organizes the calendar. In the conditions that Spain is experiencing, we perfectly understand the postponement. This is a completely reasonable and respectable decision. We understand that this is a postponement but everything is still unpredictable as we do not know how long this situation will last. Currently, what concerns Jerez is a postponement. A date that emerges? From the circuit, we can't say anything now. The calendar is managed by Dorna. Obviously this concerns not only the Jerez circuit, but also the rest of the circuits with upcoming dates. Anything that could be said at this moment would be venturing into saying something that is not known. In the current situation, we don't know what will happen, not even in May. We have postponed this Grand Prix, but we don't know where we will be in May. With the health measures put in place by the government, that takes us until April 9, but from there, no one knows anything. But we see things positively and, at the circuit, we continue to work for our Grand Prix. We are confident that we will get through this and that all engine fans will come to Jerez this year. This is our hope and we are working on it. The postponement has hurt us financially, but we need to understand the situation we find ourselves in in Spain. »

First of all, Cayetano Gomez also clearly suggested on Onda Cero that tickets would not be refunded in the event that spectators were not able to attend a postponed Grand Prix, in accordance with the general conditions of sale which stipulate that “The organizer reserves the right to modify, if circumstances require, the dates, times, programs or performers announced, as well as to order the suspension of the show. »

Faced with the general discontent which began to rise in view of the exceptional circumstances among Spanish fans already with tickets, the site motorcycling.es reports that the Jerez circuit would have gone back and finally announced that the spectator already with a ticket will have two options, from the moment the new date is defined: either use their ticket already purchased for the new date, or get your ticket refunded. That is to say the same conditions as those concerning the Grands Prix in Aragón and Valencia.

For the moment, however, we cannot find any official communication of this…
