A lack of visibility is feared in the event of a night race in the rain at Losail, but no decision has yet been made.

Further checks will be needed before making a final decision on the Qatar Grand Prix. According to Crash.net, no final decision has been made regarding the time of the first race of the season, as drivers fear a situation where visibility would be reduced in the event of rain.

It all comes down to the fact that in recent years, races have been seriously disrupted during the first meeting of the season due to storms. In 2009, especially, the race was postponed to the next day, while in 2017 qualifying was canceled and the start of the Grand Prix delayed by more than 45 minutes. In 2018, it was therefore decided to bring the races forward to avoid this situation, but since then tests have been carried out on a wet track in order to be ready for any eventuality.

The drivers considered the conditions acceptable to take part in the race, although they raised the problem of visibility under artificial lights in the event of heavy rain. This situation did not lead to a final decision being taken at the last meeting of the Safety Commission. Carmelo Ezpeleta, Manager Dorna Sport, declared: “Opinions were divided, so any final vote was postponed. »

Ezpeleta also added: “In essence, the drivers gave a positive opinion during the tests carried out on the artificially wet track. However, they expressed doubts about good visibility in the event of heavy rain at night. This is therefore a situation that still needs to be studied, but for this it is impossible to carry out a simulation. »
