Race Management

Before the 2023 Grand Prix season begins, a grooming within so-called “Race Management” was carried out. An initiative which shows that this vintage will be very different from the others, with some speaking of a new era of which the new format with the Saturday sprints is the gateway. To now manage 42 races, and no longer just 21, we had to get up to speed. However, as for the much-maligned position of president of the FIM Stewards’ College, nothing will change. Freddie Spencer hasn't finished hearing new things...

The former American World Champion no longer really has the consideration of his peers if we remember the respect that has taken away from him Cal Crutchlow or even the anger ofAleix Espargaró and even Lynn Jarvis. alex rins did not go too far either, almost asking that Freddie spencer and its collaborators are retired. The day after the clash in Catalonia with Nakagami, the Spaniard declared: “They don’t have the level for MotoGP. They have to change the three people who are there. They don't do their job well ».

A call that will not have been heard. Because in the new organization chart, Freddie spencer remains at the head of the FIM Stewards' College, the sanctioning body of MotoGP. He will do one more year as president, a position he has held since 2019 and which is decided by the members of the IRTA (Team Association). With him, we find Andrés Somolinos and Tamara Matko, fulfilling the functions of FIM Stewards.

Race Management: Freddie Spencer has been reappointed, but who would want his job?

Otherwise, the desire was to separate the management of each category. Fact, Mike webb, the person who until now held the position of race director for all disciplines, will continue to occupy this role in 2023, but exclusively for the MotoGP. The Moto2, Moto3 and MotoE categories will now be in control of Graham Webber, who until now worked as Webb's assistant race director, and George Massaro for the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and Talent Cup training categories.

As for the representatives of the FIM and Dorna within the Race Direction, Tomé Alfonso Ezpeleta, nephew of Carmelo Ezpeleta, will this year be the person who will represent the interests of the international federation within this body, a role that he will combine with that of FIM Safety Official, after having inherited the position which, until the year last was in the hands of Franco Uncini. With him, Loris Capirossi, who will be Dorna's representative to the Race Direction.
