MotoGP Malaysia J2, Jorge Martin (Ducati Q2/S1): "Today I have nothing to celebrate"

Jorge Martin took a big chance on the title during this Sprint in Malaysia. Although he was beaten in qualifying, The Spaniard got off to a better start than Pecco Bagnaia and was never caught again. On the third lap, the official Ducati rider made one mistake too many, the one that will probably cost him the world championship title. From then on, the "Martinator" only had to manage the gap with a resilient Marc Marquez, but unable to catch him. An extremely important victory that will make him go down in history shortly.

Unlike some past Grands Prix, Jorge Martin did not exult at the finish, and certainly did not consider himself already champion. With a 29-point lead over his closest pursuer, he would only need to score nine more points than him to be crowned champion at Sepang. « It was a very fast race, I wanted to have a very good rhythm from the start. I gave 100%, and when Pecco fell, I immediately thought it was a mistake. But I saw that it was true, and I managed the gap with Marquez until the end. » said the young Spaniard to the microphones of Sky Sports.

 

 

Surprisingly calm, Jorge Martin wants to finish the job first before taking himself for the champion, and that is all to his credit. « Today there is nothing to celebrate, especially considering the situation in Spain.. I did a good job but it's not over until it's over. Tomorrow Pecco will try to win and I have to ride like I know how. The race will be very long" he continued calmly.

 

 

The mental aspect played a big role in the performance. He did not hesitate to open up about this part of his preparation. « Today I pushed with my head. I'm tense this season, but I'm happy to have these nerves. When I put the helmet on, everything disappears. When I'm focused, there's nothing else in my head. I try to remain unperturbed. Bagnaia's qualifying time? I was under the record, if it gets better I can't do anything about it so no need to worry about it" he said, which shows his growing maturity. Finally, he had a thought for the victims of the floods in Valencia: "I send all my support to the affected families, the benefits of this victory go to them".
