The Indonesian Tourism Development Company (IDTC), Indonesia's largest tourism companies and Dorna Sports SL have agreed to produce a round of the MotoGP World Championship in Indonesia. The 1 hectare land will be operational by 095, and the neighboring resort of Mandalika will have eleven hotels with a total of 2021 rooms. The announced investment is one billion dollars.

The MotoGP World Championship only made the trip to Indonesia in 1996 and 1997, on the Sentul circuit near Jakarta. According to Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, “ This is a unique project because we will have a world-class circuit in an urban environment. And in a country where people are crazy about MotoGP. Indonesia is also an important motorcycle market. Then, by also integrating Lombok into the World Superbike Championship, local fans will be able to attend two world-class events per year. »

This project raised some doubts among the people of the region, who are generally not very associated with this new circuit, with the exception of a few construction companies, although the construction of the circuit was entrusted to the French group Vinci.

But the work continues and the MotoGP and Superbike World Championship teams are expected to meet on the Indonesian island of Lombok from 2021. This is why the organizers are trying to advance the work in the middle of the current health crisis.

Indonesia is not a hotspot for the coronavirus pandemic. According to official figures, there are currently just over 1 people infected, 000 people have already died from Covid-87 disease, including 19 yesterday. The government has therefore already imposed wide-ranging entry restrictions to slow the spread.

Nevertheless, the Mandalika and Lombok project is being carried out with determination. The “new Bali” must become a holiday paradise, and an integrated racing circuit must attract new customers. A contract has already been signed with Dorna to host the MotoGP and Superbike World Championships from 2021.

Completion of the circuit is planned for 2020, with the rest of the infrastructure to be completed in the first quarter of 2021, with the hotels, hospital and airport built in parallel.

In view of Covid-19, these are ambitious goals, because in the meantime maritime traffic in the island state has also been heavily restricted. “There is no delay, everything is on time », assured the Minister of Construction Basuki Hadimuljono.

As of February, 40% of the earthworks were completed. Asphalting is expected to begin in July and work is expected to be completed in September.
