Marco Bezzecchi put on a show for the Italian crowd at Misano and had a "truly magnificent" race, despite losing to Marc Márquez.
Marco Bezzecchi offered the Italian fans present at the Misano circuit a show they will remember. After winning yesterday's sprint race, the Italian started again from pole position this Sunday and made the best start by taking the lead in the first corner.
Now Marc Márquez was behind him for 12 laps at all costs, when he made a small mistake that allowed the #93 to overtake him. From then on, he gave no hesitation in trying to catch him. The two men engaged in a formidable battle, each beating the lap record, one to escape, the other to catch him. The suspense was at its peak right up to the last lap, but it was the eight-time World Champion who had the last word.
Never mind, Bezzecchi was celebrated as a true hero in his lap of honour and will long remember this home Grand Prix. "I tend to hide my emotions, especially in a moment of fragility, but I must admit that I was moved to see my flags, my T-shirts and the people so happy, shouting my name even though I unfortunately didn't manage to win. It was beautiful and priceless. One of the best emotions of my career.", he confided.
Looking back on his race, the Aprilia rider acknowledged Márquez's undeniable superiority and acknowledged the mistake that allowed him to pass. However, he was keen to highlight the solid progress made by the Italian manufacturer, which gives hope for good things for the end of the season.
“Since the beginning of the weekend, I was struggling with braking on the medium rear tire. Marc was really putting a lot of pressure on me and I knew he was very strong between turns 4 and 10. I knew I had to defend in that area. With that braking problem, I made a small mistake and had to ease off the front brake slightly and go wide to avoid losing the front, and Marc overtook me. After that, I just tried to stay close to him and be ready to maybe counterattack, but it wasn't enough.” he explained.
“The race was tough but really wonderful, because it was fantastic to see that I managed to stay there, even though I was on the limit, and Marc was pushing so hard. Obviously my goal was to win, but Marc was extremely fast and I think he still had a little more, especially from halfway to the end. When the tires wear out, he and the Ducati manage to be smoother and faster. We suffer less in practice, but then the conditions change in the race and we suffer more.”
"I did 27 laps completely at the limit." Marco Bezzecchi
"Anyway, I'm happy because my performance was incredible. I gave everything for the fans, for Aprilia, for my team, for the Academy. Although I did 27 laps completely at the limit, risking a crash, I managed to feel good on the bike and enjoy riding. I don't know when was the last time I felt like that."
"If I managed to fight with the Ducati riders, and even beat them, it means we did a great job. It's also true that over the race distance on Sunday it's still not enough. So we mustn't give up and we mustn't make too many comparisons or look around us. We have to focus on ourselves and try to improve more and more," he concluded.
