VR46 Ducati Team rider Marco Bezzecchi managed a solid fifth place finish at the San Marino Grand Prix, giving Valentino Rossi’s squad a satisfying conclusion to the first of two MotoGP weekends at Misano. Starting from ninth, Bezzecchi showed impeccable control on a track made tricky by intermittent rain. Tracking down his rivals, he managed to overtake Alex Marquez shortly before the finish and battled with Red Bull KTM’s Jack Miller on several occasions.
In the stands, Valentino Rossi was waiting proudly to congratulate his protégé. Bezzecchi shared his thoughts on the race and the strategic decisions made by some drivers, including George Martin, who had chosen to change motorcycles because of the rain. It was a gamble for him, " said Bezzecchi, who are " I understand Jorge's decision very well.. Sometimes the rain starts lightly and then intensifies. But in some races it stops falling, like today. It wasn't a mistake on his part, it was just a game of poker. You can come out of it either a hero or an idiot.."
Bezzecchi went on to explain that sometimes, as the leader of the championnat, it is essential to monitor rivals before making bold decisions: “ I looked at the guys in front of me. At one point I thought that if the rain continued, the race would become more complicated, but it was still manageable."
Marco Bezzecchi: “ Jorge Martin did not make a mistake »
As for the idea of introducing radio communications between the drivers and the stands, Bezzecchi expressed reservations. I don't think it would be easy to listen to messages while running. We are constantly moving on the bike, our body is in full effort, and balance is crucial. In F1 they can use radio systems, but for us the noise and the movements complicate that. Maybe they could give us information about the weather, but it's up to us to interpret the sensations on the bike.."
Regarding the victory of Marc Marquez, Bezzecchi stressed the importance of the intensive training they do on this track: " Marc is in great shape at the moment. He has also figured out how to improve the rotation of the bike, which is our weak point. He can turn the bike a little faster than me, as the data shows.."
Looking to the future with Aprilia, Bezzecchi remains focused on himself: " I'm not focusing too much on what's going on around me right now. I just hope Aprilia will be ready for the test after Valencia. So far, it's Aleix and Maverick's problem.."
