At the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix, Jorge Martin had the potential to finish on the podium, or even win the race. However, a miscalculated strategic decision relegated him to 15th place. As the rain began to intensify, Martin made the decision to pit to change bikes and switch to wet weather tires. Unfortunately for him, the rain stopped shortly after, forcing him to switch back to slick tires, causing an irreparable delay.
George Martin explained his decision at the end of the race: “ it was raining, and i thought it was better to change bikes to be able to win the race. It was possible to wait two or three more rounds, and that was the right choice. I didn't make the right strategy, that's for sure.. maybe I was thinking more about the race than the championship. Next time I'll wait just behind Pecco and do the same thing. ».
Despite the error of judgment, Martin tried to save what he could: " I was trying to do my best, even after the decision. I was stuck behind a group. I could have passed them all, but I waited so as not to risk a black flag.. I at least got one point ».
The Spanish rider also described the track conditions when he decided to change bikes: " it was very humid, and Morbidelli even fell. If it had continued, I probably would have won. But as soon as I came out of the pits, I realized that the rain had stopped. I hoped it would start again, but it didn't. ».
Jorge Martin: "ItIt was 100% my fault, but it's always helpful to have more information before the race.«
George Martin admitted that there had been a lack of communication with his Pramac team regarding weather forecasts : " we didn't really discuss what was going to happen, so i wasn't sure. It is certainly very important to communicate with the team, and maybe this time there was a misunderstanding.. It was 100% my fault, but it's always helpful to have more information before the race. ».
Gino Borsoi, team leader at Pramac, defended his driver while acknowledging the error: " Jorge made a decision based on what he felt on the track. If the rain had continued, it would have been a stroke of genius. But it didn't. These things happen. We learn while racing ».
As for the idea of radio communication between the drivers and the team, Borsoi said : " this could certainly be useful in situations like this, but it takes some getting used to. It's one thing to say it, but it's another thing to do it while a driver is in the middle of a race. I think in the future there will be a communication system between the box and the driver, Dorna is already working on this ».
With this experience, Martin seems to have learned a valuable lesson for the future. The pilot Pramac remains at the head of championnat, but its lead over bagnaia has shrunk. The 2024 MotoGP season continues to be thrilling, and every race decision matters more than ever.
