The Grand Prix of San Marino e Riviera di Rimini, round 13 of the 2024 MotoGP, was a race full of twists and turns at the Misano circuit. Pole-sitter Pecco Bagnaia held on to the lead after a great start, but rain came to disrupt the race. That's when Jorge Martin, the current championship leader, made a decision that proved disastrous.
In the seventh round, Martin returned to the pits to swap his bike for one equipped with rain tires. This choice proved unsuccessful, as the rain never intensified and the other riders, remaining on slicks, were lapping until 12 seconds faster than him. This has relegated Martin at the back of the pack and destroyed his chances of victory.
In these mixed conditions, Marc Marquez knew how to pull out all the stops. The talent of the eight-time world champion was evident from the first laps in the drizzle, when he took the lead of the race in just a few turns. Once in the lead, Marquez has never been worried by bagnaia. By controlling the race perfectly, he won his second consecutive victory after that of Aragon, bringing his MotoGP win total to 61, and to 87 in his career.
The good deal at the championship in Misano goes to Pecco Bagnaia
Pecco Bagnaia finished in second place, unable to keep up with the pace of Marquez but scoring crucial points in the title race. Enea Bastianini, meanwhile, completed the podium with second Ducati official, ahead of Brad Binder on KTM, as well as Marco Bezzecchi (VR46 Racing Team) and Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing). fabio quartararo crossed the finish line in seventh place, the first Japanese bike in the ranking.
Behind Quartararo, Jack Miller (KTM), Fabio DiGiannantonio (VR46 Racing Team) and Pol Espargaro (KTM) complete the top 10. George Martin, after returning to the pits a second time to take his bike equipped with slick tires, could only finish 15th, thus scoring one point in the standings.
The race was marked by the fall of Franco Morbidelli, who, after his podium in the Sprint, was unable to finish the main race at home.
In the general classification, George Martin keep the head with 312 points, but his lead over bagnaia is reduced to only 7 points. Marc Marquez also comes closer with 53 points behind on Martin, wheras'Enea Bastianini, fourth, has a gap of 62 points. Next step in two weeks… And it will still be at Misano !
