The British Grand Prix at the beginning of September marked the deadline for MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 teams to present their desired team composition, the desired machines as well as to submit a financial guarantee validating their commitment.

These lists, of which only the IRTA is aware today, are not final since a team can put several driver names for a place or even give itself time to negotiate with the manufacturer of its choice. It was not uncommon to see up to ten driver names for a spot while the team was still in negotiations with these drivers.

Although the announcements have multiplied in recent days, there remained many points to be clarified, particularly in Moto2 and Moto3 where contracts rarely last more than one season. In MotoGP, the chessboard converges towards its final shape.

Recall : These are lists reporting the announcements, rumors and information that we have recovered during the last events. They are not final. We will make necessary updates as we go along.

MotoGP

In 2017, the regulations extend the concessions (number of engines, tests and development) for manufacturers who have not won a dry race during the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons. The criteria for losing these benefits were changed in 2015 and have since been based on a points system:

  • 1st place: 3 concession points,
  • 2nd place: 2 concession points,
  • 3rd place: 1 concession point.

Suzuki scores a victory in the dry thanks to Viñales. With the Spaniard's podium at Le Mans, Suzuki now has 3+1 = 4 concession points. Note that for the moment, Suzuki can continue to test freely. On the other hand, a second place or two third places would increase Suzuki's account to 6 concession points. In this eventuality, Suzuki would no longer be allowed to carry out tests freely (immediate effect) and would lose all these advantages in 2017.

Today, of its 9 engines available, Viñales used 8 of which 4 are out of order (see full table here), because the seals have been removed (for development purposes, controls, etc.). For Aleix Espargaro, the situation is the same: 7 out of 9 engines, including 4 unusable. It is clear that Suzuki is taking advantage of this advantage to develop the GSX-RR engine for 2017.

Aprilia has neither podium nor victory for the moment, so the Noale firm will be able to maintain its advantages in 2017. The same for KTM who will enter Valencia this season as a wildcard with Mika Kallio then as a permanent constructor in 2017 with Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith.

Obviously, this is only valid as of this writing. The regulations may still be amended between now and the end of the season or during the off-season.

Moto2

Since last season, Suter releases a new version of its MMX2 chassis first in anticipation of the 2016 season, then the 2017 season. After being almost unanimously shunned by the entire field in 2016, the Swiss firm hopes to return to the forefront with this new model. For the moment, two teams have taken the plunge to equip themselves with Suter in 2017: IntactGP and Leopard Racing. Italtrans could also take the plunge.

WP-KTM is also entering the Moto2 field. For 2016, only the Ajo team will have the new tubular chassis from the Austrian firm.
