Peter Acosta

Things turn around quickly in Grand Prix and Pedro Acosta is the demonstration. Barely a year ago, he was identified as the future phenomenon after a first season in Moto3 ended with the world title in his pocket. Moto2 should then only be a warm-up for a MotoGP which was waiting for it. And then the reality of the competition still caught up with him, and he also experienced the injury. He understood that crossing the gates of the elite too quickly could be fatal for him but he also understands that with Izan Guavara now taking the status of the next star, he must still move forward. The doors of MotoGP will be ajar thanks to KTM which will bring it in its luggage for the Jerez test. But in 2023, he will be forbidden to disappoint in a Moto2 which promises to be ruthless between long-toothed rookies and vengeful regulars...

The good news of this start of the winter break for Peter Acosta is that he will test a MotoGP for the first time at the Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto, during the private tests that KTM will organize in the south of Spain. A MotoGP against which, in 2022, he did not feel up to the task. Because today he confirms the rumor that he did indeed have the opportunity to join in 2023. In comments spotted on Motosan, we read of him: “ when I was asked to sign for a MotoGP team in May, I didn't feel ready because I had four zeros in a row, I hadn't made any podiums or been really competitive ».

He adds : " in addition to weighing seven kilos less than now, I think that all the ambition I had weighed on me. I came in wanting to conquer the world on day one, but the world put me in my place. It's not worth moving up just to get into MotoGP and get a year out of my life. I think everything has its time in life ».

Pedro Acosta: “ you should not get into MotoGP at any cost«

The team that already wanted it was Honda. For his first year in Moto2, Peter Acosta finished fifth in the world championship, collecting 3 victories, 5 podiums and a pole position. An assessment which gives him more confidence: “ my goal is to fight for the title in 2023 or to have a season that makes me feel like I'm ready. You should not get into MotoGP at any cost ».

He also states that he would be delighted to race in the premier category with KTM because " it's the brand that believed in me and allowed me to move from the Spanish Championship to Moto3 and this year to Moto2 ". And it will also be the manufacturer that put it on a MotoGP for the first time, with this Jerez test coming up.

On this point, Acosta will join a short list of riders who, before their debut in MotoGP, had the opportunity to test the potential offered by this type of prototype. In this case, in November 2014 in Valencia, there was Alex Marquez on his brother Marc's RC213V just two days after being crowned Moto3 world champion.

Another rider also received laps on a MotoGP bike as a reward for his great year. It is Pecco Bagnaia. The current champion of the premier category made this bet with Jorge Martinez Aspar in 2016: if he won at least two victories that year in Moto3, the former Valencian rider would have to lend the Ducati of the Pull&Bear Aspar Team to Italian for at least a few rounds. Bet held after Pecco won two Grands Prix, that of Assen and Malaysia. The Piedmontese thus took advantage of the Ducati of the Spanish team for nine laps during the Valencia test, the Italian was able to do a nine-lap session aboard the Desmodedici of the Spanish team…
