In the closing stages of the Portuguese Grand Prix, an intense battle for fifth position ensued between factory Ducati rider Pecco Bagnaia and Gresini Racing's Marc Marquez, riding a Desmosedici from the previous year. The latter, with his GP23, attempted a daring maneuver on the twenty-third lap by diving inside the double world champion, but slightly widened his trajectory after taking the advantage. As he tried to regain his composure to maintain his new position, Bagnaia attempted to regain the advantage, resulting in a collision between the two. The resulting crash saw Marquez recover to finish 16th, while Bagnaia retired to the pit lane shortly after...
The race management examined the incident, concluding that it was a racing incident without imposing sanctions, according to a press release from the FIM which stated: “ after consultation with the pilots concerned and after re-examination, it was concluded that the incident was accidental in nature. No further action will be taken ».
This collision constitutes a first major challenge for Ducati in the management of its teams, exacerbated by the fact that Marquez does not have a direct contract with the Italian manufacturer.

The first major incident between Pecco Bagnaia and Marquez at Ducati will therefore have been due to racing
After this incident, bagnaia finds himself late championnat de 23 point rear George Martin, the winner of Portimao and competitor within the team Bow Ducati. He had already compromised his chances of victory during the Sprint race on Saturday because of an error at the end of the race. For his part, Marc Marquez lies 27 points of the championship leader, although his podium finish in Saturday's Sprint Race lessened the impact of this incident on his position in the general classification.
The incident also benefited the team KTM, with Brad Binder et Jack Miller who fought their way to the top of the rankings after being left behind at the start of the race.
Shortly before this mishap, the newcomer Pedro Acosta, driving for the team Tech3, had exceeded bagnaia for fourth position, having previously exceeded Marquez. Acosta thus achieved his first podium in MotoGP after Maverick Vinales encountered a mechanical problem and crashed on the last lap of the race.
