The report on falls in MotoGP in 2021 recognized Iker Lecuona as the man who fell more often than not with 26 accidents in front of a peloton of Hondas led in particular by Marc Marquez with 22 visits to the gravel trap. But there is also the classification of routes where it is easier to fall than elsewhere. And this year, it’s the land of rillettes which didn’t make the pilots laugh…
It will be recalled that during the 2021 season, a total of 950 falls were counted in the three categories brightening up a Grand Prix program on the 18 race weekends. According to official statistics from motogp.com, 278 of them are listed in the queen category, 367 in Moto2 and 305 in Moto3. Iker Lecuona (26 falls), Aron Canet (21 falls) Kaito Toba (19 falls) won the unpopular title of the kings of the cabriolet in their category, namely MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 respectively.
But this classification is also made according to the circuits. We therefore know which Grand Prix was the most difficult in this area. As in 2020, the Bugatti circuit is at the top of these statistics. The previous year, there had been 100 falls in French Grand Prix. In 2021, a total of 118 falls was recorded during a weekend marked by unpredictable weather. It is 12,42% of the whole season. 37 of them were counted on the sole turn 3, which has become the most delicate turn of the entire calendar. But this was also the case last year with 30 accidents.
MotoGP: Le Mans the least welcoming and Qatar the most lenient
Le Mans is followed by the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix which took place from October 22 to 24, much later than the usual Misano event in September and which recorded 96 falls. This is almost twice as many as during the first Misano Grand Prix (50 falls). Third place goes to the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez (67 falls), fourth place is shared by the Catalan Grand Prix and the German motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sachsenring with 57 falls each.
On the other hand, the drivers of the World Championship were particularly spared in the Qatar. Thus, at the Doha Grand Prix, which also took place on the Losail international circuit just one week after the opening of the season, there were only 27 falls.
By the way, speedweek reminds us: it was at the Valencia Grand Prix in 2018 that we noted the record for falls in a meeting, during a final in the rain which counted no less than… 155 accidents.
