On the grid for the last German Grand Prix, quite a few drivers were far from being at their best. The Espargaró brothers thus had their share of physical concerns just as the LCR drivers had to grit their teeth to maintain their rank. And yet, they did not fail, showing admirable self-sacrifice... Which deserves some explanation!

Apart Aleix Espargaró who only missed the points target for a single lap, the others mentioned above did not return empty-handed from a Sachsenring which represented a terrible physical challenge for them. Cal Crutchlow even got on the podium... Which made him ironic that he should be injured more often in view of this result!

An irony no doubt, but it makes sense. John Hopkins, a veteran who knows what riding with an injury entails, explains: “ I know from experience that this also has benefits when you are injured » says the 36-year-old retiree. “ Expectations aren't so high and it puts a lot less pressure on your shoulders ».

He adds : " each driver puts pressure on himself and imposes a high level of demands on himself. For example, Crutchlow knows that he is a leader. He should be able to fight for the podium in every race. It hasn't worked so well in previous races, but sometimes it helps to make a small change, and it can be a minor injury ».

« Physically it will always be a challenge, although the adrenaline on the bike can of course do a lot. But when it comes to mentality, in such a case, as a driver you always start with less expectations from the fans, your team and yourself in the race ". In this case, everything is a bonus. You still need to have the character and the resistance to hold on until the finish…
