After a disappointing first day of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, fabio quartararo and the Monster Energy Yamaha team MotoGP decided to stop trying new things every session and start with an already known and proven foundation.
16th during Practice and 8th during Q1, it was therefore from 18th position that the Frenchman started for the 10 laps of the Sprint on Saturday. At the end of the latter which had a frantic pace, El Diablo crossed the line in 11th position, 15 seconds behind the winner Enea Bastianini.
With a deficit of 1,5 seconds per lap, the Yamaha still visibly lacks performance, and the number 20 can only be patient.
“Not much to tell. For the sprint, we used a base that we knew, because in any case, we try too many things. We were lost, clearly. For the Sprint, we tried to return to a base that I knew a little bit about. It was a lot better, even if it wasn't crazy yet, but it was already a lot better than during the tests. I don't even know which one it is, honestly, but it's more or less based on last year, 2 years ago. It’s a base that we more or less used for quite a while, but more than that, it was that, throughout the weekend, each time we changed bikes and it was complicated.”
Since the packageAlex Rins for the rest of the weekend, the Niçois is in fact alone in defending Iwata's colors, but that hardly changes the problem, even if everyone adopted their own settings...
“No, we never have the same bike, we have a totally different riding style, and the problems are always the same. Even Remy, who doesn't have much experience on motorcycles, he sees straight away where the limit is, and when a rider really sees the limit with little experience, it's because we're really in difficulty. And that's it, so that's why we have to find the solution to have a lot more grip, and that's what we really lacked today to at least finish in the top 10. Yes, it's less worse, but more than the position, it's above all how far we finished from Jack, and from Vinales who was in front of us and who was not very very far. On the last lap, I made 2 big mistakes, I would have finished, come on, a little second closer, but hey, more than the position it's the gap that we have to look at at the moment, and I think that It wasn’t that bad.”
Does his teammate get injured slow down the team's progress or do the objectives remain the same?
“Both, it slows down, the objectives remain the same, but it’s true that in the end, I’m all alone (laughs). It's been two races where, yes Remy is there and trying things, but there he is, he's still in a little difficulty. But for now we are all alone. »
Asked about the absence of Cal Crutchlow, temporary or permanent, fabio quartararo explains that Yamaha does not rule out hiring another test rider, next year or even sooner…
" We are working on it. We are working on a few pilots there. So there you have it, I think we could maybe have a good test driver before next year. »
We then think of current MotoGP riders whose future still seems very uncertain, such as Jack Miller ou Augusto Fernandez ...
