Reading the time sheets, Joan Mir has every reason to be satisfied with the return of MotoGP to the Red Bull Ring. At the start of this Styrian Grand Prix, he did not leave the leading trio, whether on the dry or wet track. And yet, the World Champion is far from enthusiastic. Thus, he sounds the alarm about the dangers that a race in the rain would cause on this track while he restrains himself so as not to get angry with Suzuki whose level correction device on his GSX-RR remains still in prototype stage...

Joan mir isn't exactly the easy type to please. Second in cumulative times of one Styrian Grand Prix where he has thus established himself as one of the favorites, he first highlights the fears and disappointments before dwelling on his results. The charge is also quite virulent on the subject of safety, insufficient according to him in the rain: “ it's dangerous in the rain, very dangerous », the Spaniard bluntly clarified. “ The first corner is very slippery in the wet, but turn 3 is even more dangerous. If you fall there, alone, I think it wouldn't be a problem, but in a group then it's super dangerous. I don't know what we can do, but the clearance area isn't big enough and it's not safe in the rain »

The whistleblower having carried out his function, the pilot succeeds him: “ the sensations on the track were correct, that's the most important thing. It's good to start with a good foundation that makes everything a little easier. I was able to work for the dry race from the first free practice session. In the rain we went a little further, but I was able to improve during the session and I got stronger lap after lap, ultimately it didn't look bad. It was a positive day ».

World champion Joan Mir: he loses time by accelerating out of a corner

Joan Mir: “without the acceleration problems, the first day in Austria would have gone very well”

However, he cannot hide his disappointment at still having to deal with a Suzuki without the complete “holeshot device”: “ I feel very strong in the braking zones, and we are doing well in the third and fourth sector corners “, declared the MotoGP world champion, who then emphasizes: “ we need to work on acceleration because I'm losing something in that area and if we can improve on that we will be very strong. I hope that on Saturday we will be able to do some tests with the self-leveling device, which is still only a prototype, and then we'll see where we are. But first we have to understand it ».

The teammate ofalex rins specifies that his regrets are all the greater as the Red Bull Ring has other requirements than the Assen and Sachsenring tracks: “ at Sachsenring the acceleration doesn't matter much, and at Assen it's just a curve followed by a longer straight, so it doesn't really matter in the end. Without the acceleration problems, the first day in Austria would have gone very well for us. However, we have little room for improvement, there are only small things we can improve. In the future, the "ride height device" could help us take a step, but currently it is still too early ". Joan Mir is therefore always champing at the bit.
