The 2016 MotoGP season was marked by two major technical changes. On the one hand, the installation of a unique new manufacturer which also marked Michelin's return to the category. And, on the other hand, the grafting onto all motorcycles of a single electronic control unit. The entire field accepted it and the sport was enhanced with nine different winners. A record. But perhaps it was Suzuki who knew how to best pull the chestnuts out of the fire.
Yamaha initially dominated then Honda worked to take the title while Ducati returned to victory. Among these three manufacturers, which one has benefited the most from the new technical situation? A fourth ! Called Suzuki.
Suzuki has thus returned to a success lost sight of since 2007 and has been able, with the redistribution of the pneumatic and electronic cards, to more quickly close its gap compared to its direct competitors. An approach that the boss on the ground Davide Brivio don't deny crash.net : " we are indeed one of the manufacturers who have benefited from the changes. On electronics, if we had stuck to the past regulations, we would have had more difficulty catching up with our competitors ».
« For us, this upheaval was positive. The sport also benefited from this with nine different winners while the field saw the arrivals not only of Suzuki but also of Aprilia and KTM. We are now six manufacturers in this championship ».
« As for the tires, it's the same thing. Everyone started from scratch when it came to settings. A situation which less disadvantaged those who had the least experience, which was our case ».
Suzuki took a victory in 2016 thanks to a Maverick Vinales who finished fourth in the championship. In 2017, the GSX-RR will have a new rider pair consisting of Iannone andalex rins.
