The world of MotoGP will soon be coming to the big screen. On January 23rd, "Ídolos," an ambitious Spanish film directed by Mat Whitecross, produced in collaboration with RTVE and filmed on the most iconic circuits of the world championship, will be released.
The story follows Edu Serra, played by Óscar Casas, a young two-wheeled prodigy whose raw talent clashes with his fiery temperament. Banned by professional teams, his career is revived when Eli, the team manager... Aspar Moto2, offers him one last chance – on one condition: agree to be trained by his father, Antonio Belardi, a disgraced former driver responsible for the death of a colleague in a race.
The film revolves around this father-son conflict, where resentment, guilt, and a quest for redemption intertwine with the adrenaline of the paddock. Meanwhile, Ana Mena plays Luna, a young tattoo artist who brings a more intimate and emotional dimension to Edu's character, a blend of tenderness and chaos.
Ídolos traces Edu Serra's progression through the categories until his entry into MotoGP, where he joins the team Pramac Racing — a first in a fiction film benefiting from the official collaboration of Dorna Sports.
The racing sequences were filmed on authentic circuits: Austin, Misano, Aragon, Montmelò, Jerez, Motegi, and of course Valencia, the team's home turf. Asparagus. An exceptional setup for a non-documentary European film.

Ídolos: “ I wanted to understand what drives them to ride at over 360 km/h and to get back on their bikes after terrifying crashes. "
British director Mat Whitecross — known for The Road to Guantanamo and the music documentaries Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams and Oasis: Supersonic — described the shoot as a colossal challenge:
« Every day was an adventure. We were filming with one of the most epic and dangerous sports in the world as our backdrop. »
He emphasizes the determination of the plateau: Our actors, the technical team, and the studio were fully committed. Without this total dedication, we could never have overcoming obstacles »
The cast, including Claudio Santamaria and Enrique Arce, completes an ambitious ensemble that Whitecross considers to be " one of his most intense and rewarding film shoots ».
Screenwriter and producer Jordi Gasull, who originated the project, reveals that Idols is the result of a decade of gestation.
« I started “Idolos” ten years agoMy initial goal was to make a documentary about the perilous life of a racer. I wanted to understand what drives them to ride at over 360 km/h and to get back on their bikes after terrifying crashes. »
The decisive turning point came after a conversation with Manel Arroyo, then director of audiovisual production at Dorna :
« He told me, “Forget documentaries. You make good films, why not offer me a project?” A Day of Thunder on a Motorcycle ?""
This is how a fiction was born at the crossroads of human drama and mechanical passion, a mix that MotoGP fans will find with a realism rarely achieved on screen.
With IdolsSpain releases its first feature-length fiction film centered on the MotoGP since Faster (2003) and its documentary spin-offs. The film is presented as a tribute to the drivers, but also a reflection on the price of talent and redemption in a sport where the limit is literally death.
