This 2024 MotoGP season has been entirely dominated by Jorge Martín and Pecco Bagnaia, and the total laps led by each rider during the campaign shows it once again. Both in the Sprint and in the Main Race, the two title contenders have left (almost) nothing to their opponents. It is still worth diving into the top 10 riders with the most laps led this year.
When looking at the total number of laps completed in first place, Pecco Bagnaia has overtaken Jorge Martín, and by a long way. With a score of 349, the Italian is almost 100 lengths ahead of the Spaniard.
A number largely justified by the eleven victories won by Bagnaia on Sunday, when the length of the race is doubled compared to the Sprint. On Saturday, however, Jorge Martín puts himself ahead of Bagnaia, having spent six more laps than his opponent in the lead.
As for the rest of the standings, their statistics are barely significant. Unsurprisingly, Marc Marquez is in third place. Victorious three times on Sunday, the multiple MotoGP world champion has completed 60 laps while defending the lead of a race. The latter's closest pursuer may, however, be surprising. If we instinctively think of Enea Bastianini, it is Maverick Vinales who is in fourth place.
The Aprilia rider led one more lap than the Italian. A score mainly fueled by the weekend in Austin, during which 'Batmav' dominated the Sprint, before doubling the lead in the Main Race. Behind the twenty or so laps led by these two men, we find Pedro Acosta, who crossed the start/finish line thirteen times with the lead in a race.
The rookie of this 2024 MotoGP season is also the last of the six riders to have completed a lap in the lead on Sunday this season, since the other riders in this top-10 have only defended the lead of a race in a Sprint. Raul Fernandez (2), who led during the Sprint in Catalonia, is ahead of Brad Binder (1), and Aleix Espargaró (1), who took the lead of the same race.
The local rider of the stage with the advantage of having taken the lead during the last lap to go, thanks to the fall of Pecco Bagnaia. The one and only lap that he spent in the lead during this MotoGP season will therefore have brought him the victory.
