Alex Marquez

Before the start of the season, we presented the points to watch out for throughout the year. In this same section, we postulated that Álex Márquez was the driver who played the biggest on the entire grid. After a lackluster start to his MotoGP career, the golden opportunity to sign with Gresini Racing aboard a Ducati Desmosedici presented itself. A godsend for a double world champion in search of legitimacy. After five races, what conclusions can we draw? Analysis.

I) The account is not there

Very objectively, let's start by looking at the guy's statistical record. The least we can say is that he is not in the game. Currently 12th in the championship, Álex Márquez is struggling in the soft underbelly of the peloton and “only” 16 points to his teammate Fabio DiGiannantonio, arguably one of the five weakest drivers in the field.

He still achieved a podium and a pole position in Argentina. But let's not hide our faces, the conditions were unique. We must nevertheless highlight this great effort. For the rest, it's very average with a lot of falls, but we'll come back to that later..

Of course, his record is much better than that of last year at the same point, that's obvious, especially since he was unlucky as we will study a little later. But compared to the expectations placed on him, we can only be disappointed. Before the start, we predicted an underdog season worthy of its track record; why not see him play spoilsport in every race. A bit like what Luca Marini is currently doing, in short, much better than what he offers us. Because beyond the results, that’s what’s wrong.

II) A problem of approach

Among the 22 riders who make up the MotoGP grid (normally), he is one of the least fair of all. Explanations.

Accuracy is difficult to define but it combines racing intelligence and the ability to overtake and judge. Simply put, it’s your propensity to make the most of every opportunity. In this area, he does worse than his brother Marc, which is saying.

Álex Márquez is at the limit on every overtake, and again at Le Mans, this was seen with an error in the Chapelle corner which will cost him a penalty of three positions on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix. VSThis time, it was perfectly justified in our opinion because it was totally useless on the one hand, and dangerous.

If it were only that, we would not take it up. But with him, it’s during every outing, or almost. During the Sprint at Le Mans, he again found himself at the heart of a collision with Aleix Espargaró. This results in numerous falls, although last Sunday's was not entirely his fault: He could not avoid Luca Marini.

III) Why so much commitment?

He knows it full well: Álex Márquez must perform to hope to keep a ride in MotoGP. It is for this same reason that we placed it among the topics to be followed with the greatest attention before the Portuguese round. Each time he goes out, he wants to show off, to prove that he too can play with the big names.

So, yes, it should also be noted that his two withdrawals from Austin were not his fault: Like others, he was unhappy. Sick on Saturday then broke by Jorge Martin on Sunday he could do nothing.

Considering his package, it is normal to ask him for more. The start of the year is favorable for the breakthrough of satellite machines because the official ones will only progress during 2023. If we take his team into account, he has a very efficient machine with which Enea Bastianini worked miracles last year.

There remains reason for hope, that's for sure. As said previously, his statistical record is tinged with bad luck and this can turn out, and we think his performance is “worth more” than 12th place. But from there to navigating between 4th and 6th place, it's another lemonade.

We are convinced that he must change his approach and, more broadly, calm down for his own good and that of the peloton.

What do you think ? Does he have the resources to change the dynamic in his favor? Tell us everything in the comments!
