The 2015 season was legendary ; this battle between the three titans has not finished spilling ink. However, the 2022 financial year has serious advantages. On the way to a little analysis of this championship, and why he could make history.

Of course, the show is all about point of view. This article only reflects the thoughts of its author, and you are free to discuss it in the comments. All will be read and discussed.

What is a legendary championship?

It is necessary to find strong historical markers to qualify a championship in this way. In MotoGP, all the most notable championships, throughout history, respond to specific characteristics, such as suspense for example. It is important to have a close championship, ideally until the end, but not only that.

Likewise, the spectacle on the track must be there. More than the excesses, it is the dramatic unfolding that takes precedence, the strong, sometimes sad images. A great season means unforgettable photos, strong emotions, and injustice too. In short, it's all that's best and worst in the sport, but with a MotoGP twist. Of course, other markers can be found, such as the intrinsic level of the pilots; to win without danger, we triumph without glory.

Does the 2022 championship have any chance of becoming legendary?

Certainly, and for many reasons.

First of all, it is the scene of a real rupture, a radical change in the appearance of the plateau. Japanese firms no longer dominate. The Assen Grand Prix confirms a real trend, which began around 2017 and the decline of Yamaha as a manufacturer. No Japanese machine in the top 4 at the finish. This hasn't happened since 1972 Nations Grand Prix, we must realize the historical significance of this statistic. In addition, no motorcycle with three tuning forks finished in the points, which was the case for Honda at the Sachsenring! For the winged firm, we must go back to 1982 French Grand Prix at Nogaro, won by Michael Frutschi on Sanvenero. And again, the favorites had boycotted the race. This change of hands makes the season remarkable, without even mentioning the thunderous announcement from Suzuki, which will leave the paddocks at the end of 2022.

But that's not all. We've already had quite a few highlights. Starting with the Bastianini's victory in Qatar, Sunday that we will not soon forget. This victory is of major historical interest and colossal beauty, as is the tribute to Fausto Gresini. The awakening ofAleix Espargaro, unloved, a pleasure to see. He is reborn and finally wins on an Aprilia that he himself has been upgrading since 2016. This story is crazy and will be told long after the epilogue in Valencia, regardless of the outcome of the championship.

The form of Quarterly is a pleasure to see, he who is more serene, sure and strong than ever. We are perhaps seeing the future face of the Grands Prix evolve, as Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez did before him, without even talking about level, just image. Marquez, let’s talk about it. He who continued the fight like a bruised beast before having to throw in the towel Mugello, to perhaps make a second legendary comeback. A sad image which will remain and which could become even more so if the Spaniard no longer gets back on an RCV.

All this makes 2022 a significant year, undoubtedly more than previous seasons.

What is he missing?

We're spoiled for now but we could be even more spoiled. Of course, no complaints here but just suggestions, in case the racing gods read these words.

Great duels. For the moment, we have not had the opportunity to see an explanation Quartararo – Bagnaia with an outcome in the last corner, where the two drivers give everything, face to face, thinking only of winning. The kind of epic struggle that we sit before, without saying a word, while knowing the scope of what we are about to contemplate.

A close championship would be dreamed of, but seems more complicated. “El Diablo” dominates, despite the rather slim gap of 21 points which does not reflect his level of driving since the start of the season. Come on, a little flag-to-flag race in Austria? Let's stop there, we're probably asking too much.

And you, what do you think of this 2022 season?
