The fact that MotoGP is going faster and faster is a reality that we face when we watch the races. If optimal conditions are met, some motorcycles are capable of continuing to beat the speed record set so far. At the moment this record has only one owner, and that is Brad Binder on top with the KTM at Mugello 2023.

Saturday's sprint at the Italian Grand Prix was quite an adventure for the South African, who for the first time managed to reach 366,1 km/h in the starting straight, which totals a distance of 1 kilometer and 141 meters. With this record, this is the second time KTM has held the top speed record.

“My bike is a rocket, the team did an incredible job,” said Binder when he realized he had reached this speed. “ I always managed to overtake the other drivers at the end of the straight. It's so nice to have a few extra km/h in your pocket. It's exciting and makes overtaking a little easier “, he declared, according to SpeedWeek.com.

Along with the Autodromo Internazionale in Mugello, the other circuit on the calendar used to breaking records was the Losail International Circuit, in Qatar. But in 2023, this was not the case, since the finish line was shifted by 30 meters compared to previous years, and the speed radar by the same amount, giving lower speeds. But despite these meters of difference, Ducati riders Bastianini, Bezzecchi and Zarco managed to establish a speed of 356,4 km/h* .

Over the years, the maximum speed in MotoGP has increased

In 2002, the first year of the MotoGP era, a speed of 324,5 km/h was reached, and from that moment on it has only evolved, with Mugello being the circuit that achieved the most speed records.

Currently the record is held by Brad Binder, but Spanish drivers are also very used to these speeds: Dani Pedrosa recorded in 2009, also at Mugello, a speed of 349,3 km/h with the Honda which he was driving at the time. Since 2009, Pedrosa held the speed record in the premier category until 2014, when Andrea Iannone took it with the Ducati by only three tenths. At the end of 2015, it is Marc Marquez who achieved the best top speed, putting for the first time his motorcycle at 350 km/h. From there, the riders and teams progressed and improved the speed of the bikes, so much so that we now have a total of twelve drivers who were able to exceed 360 km/h.
