Decisions of the Grand Prix Commission

The Grand Prix Commission, composed of MM. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, president), Paul Duparc (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Biense Bierma (MSMA), in the presence of Jorge Viegas (FIM), Carlos Ezpeleta (Dorna), Mike Trimby (IRTA, session secretary) and Corrado Cecchinelli (Chief Technology Officer), in a meeting held in Valencia on November 4, 2022, made the following decisions:

Sports regulations

Effective for the 2023 season (from November 07, 2022)

Races interrupted and restarted
The Commission approved a change to the allocation of Championship points and changed the wording to make a third race less likely (especially in Moto2 and Moto3), however the regulations regarding the conditions for restarting an interrupted race remain unchanged. In summary :
– If none of the races has completed at least 3 laps, and it is not possible to restart, the race is considered void and no points will be awarded.
– If the sum of laps completed in all races (counting only races that had more than 3 laps) is:

    • less than 50% of the initial distance of the race → half points will be awarded.
    • greater than 50% of the initial race distance → full points will be awarded.

New sports format from 2023
After further consultation with the Moto3 and Moto2 teams, the Commission has confirmed an amendment to the sporting format introduced in 2023. For these categories only, the three free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday will continue to be timed with the aim of progress towards QP1 and QP2.

Qualification for the race
The Commission approved the removal of the right of Race Direction to waive, at its discretion, the obligation for a rider to have achieved, in a session, a lap time less than 105% of the fastest rider in the race. this session. However, the Race Direction will retain the right to this exemption for the MotoE World Championship where there are fewer test sessions.

Technical regulations

Entry into force of the 2023 season (beginning on November 07, 2022) MotoGP class

Fuel Capacity – Sprint Races
The maximum fuel tank capacity for sprint races has been confirmed at 12 liters. Teams may choose to use a specially designed fuel tank with this capacity or an alternative method to reduce the capacity of the normal tank. Other regulations relating to fuel tanks will be in accordance with those of long-term races, for example, ambient fuel temperature, technical inspection method, etc.

Swingarm Spoon Ground Clearance – MotoGP class
Following an incident during the 2022 San Marino GP, where the swingarm spoon of a machine broke following contact with a vibrator, it was decided that the minimum permitted ground clearance had to be increased by 15 mm, to reach 35 mm.

Brake disc holder – All classes
After consultation with suppliers, the following regulation has been confirmed: Composite constructions of brake disc carriers (including those reinforced with carbon fibers, glass fibers and other similar materials) are not permitted. The only permitted materials are magnesium and aluminum alloys.

Fuel Tanks – All Classes
The materials permitted for the construction of fuel tanks have been confirmed: The main structure of the fuel tank must be made entirely of steel or aluminum. However, the use of other materials, including carbon fiber, aramid fiber and fiberglass, is permitted as a supplement where necessary, to add additional stiffness and protection or for other purposes.

Runner's equipment

Leathers
Following incidents where riders' leathers came loose while on the track, a new positive closure system was agreed with the manufacturers. The use of leather with this closure system is now mandatory.

Helmets
The FIM continues its mission of improving riders' equipment and developing helmets. In accordance with this policy:
Only helmets approved by the FIM (with a valid FIM approval label) will be authorized with the following deadlines:

  • Until 31/12/2025: FRHPhe-01 & FRHPhe-02
  • From 01/01/2026: FRHPhe-02 only. A list of FIM approved helmets is available on www.frhp.org.
