Son of the 1987 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner, Remy had to start fighting at a young age to make a name for himself. Born on February 3, 24 in Sydney, Gardner junior climbed all the steps one by one to now participate in the Moto1998 World Championship on a Kalex from the Onexox TKKR SAG Team. He has competed in 2 GPs, including 84 in Moto21 and 3 in Moto63, and scored a Moto2 pole last year at Assen.

This season, he started like a rocket with fifth place in Qatar, while his best result is still his second position obtained in Argentina in 2019, his only podium so far, all categories combined. Remy therefore still does not have a victory, even if he only finished 1.244 behind Lorenzo Baldassarri last year on the 4,806 km of the South American circuit of Termas de Río Hondo.

During his first full season in 2015, in a CIP team Mahindra, he managed to achieve his best result of tenth place at home in Phillip Island. His best position in the general classification of the World Championship was fifteenth last year on a Kalex from the SAG team. He previously finished ninth in the CEV in Moto2 in 2014.

Sixth in Argentina and fifth in Valencia in 2018, he confirmed in 2019 with second place in Argentina and fourth in Qatar and at Silverstone. He therefore considers himself ready to move to the next category.

“I don’t want to stay in Moto2 any longer, I want to be in MotoGP. My Moto2 team manager Eduardo Perales understands this. He wants to help me get the best possible results so I can move on to MotoGP » explained the Australian to Nora Lantschner of Speedweek. com.

“2020 would be my fourth full year in Moto2. Now that we're really at the top, I feel like I'm struggling with my weight. Considering how tight Moto2 is, every detail counts. My weight doesn't really help there. »

“In Qatar, during the first half of the race, it was pretty clear that with a full tank I was having problems with that little extra weight. I lose acceleration, then the guys approach me while braking, I fight and at the start of the race I lose time. Then, when there is less fuel in the tank, I can come back strong. I think I showed a lot of potential in this area. »

“And when Fabio was still in Moto2, I was also fighting with him – on a Mistral, which was not the best chassis in the world. »

“My height, weight and physique really fit the MotoGP bike. I also rode Superbikes. A few years ago I also took part in an IDM race in an R1. They gave me a standard R1, which I practiced with at the Sachsenring. I remember that I immediately had a great time. The bigger bikes suit me and I feel really ready. »

You talked about Fabio Quartararo: He never fought for the title in Moto2 and Moto3, but in MotoGP he had great success in his first year. Does that make him some sort of role model?

“Yes, it gives confidence. And that really shows you the level we have in Moto2. Fabio won a Moto2 race in Montmeló… The level in Moto2 is so high that six or seven riders could move to MotoGP and achieve very good performances. Of course, some more than others – it's a question of driving style, physics and things like that. The problem is the lack of free places on the starting grid! »

But when there are no races, it is also difficult to attract the attention of a MotoGP team. How will you get a place?

" It's a good question. It was also the first thing that came to mind when all this started. Like I said, my goal is to move up the ranks. But if there is no race, how can you show your face? Will Dorna step in and say everything will stay the same for 2021? I don't know. It's hard. I also don't know if teams will risk putting a Moto2 rider in danger after just one race in the 2020 season. Or will they look at past results? I don't know. »

If you could choose one bike for the MotoGP rookie season, what would it be?

“I think everyone would like to have a Yamaha. (He's laughing.) The Petronas saddle on a Yamaha is the golden seat that everyone wants. But all the manufacturers in MotoGP are great. It would simply be a dream to go there. »

So if you have a chance, will you take it, regardless of the team?

" Yes I'll do it. Of course, you always want to try to get the best set possible. And I think I could do a pretty good job even with a less competitive bike.” »
