After a magnificent fight against Romano Fenati and Joan Mir, Aron Canet managed to win his first GP in Jerez in front of his family, ahead of Fenati, Mir, Ramirez, di Giannantonio, Migno and Bulega.

On the starting grid, a 100% Honda first row preceded a 100% KTM second row. The Madrilenian George Martin started for the second time this year (after Qatar) and in his career in pole position. Alongside the Team driver Fausto Gresini were Aron Canet for the teamEmilio Alzamora (Estrella Galicia) and Roman Fenati for Marinelli Rivacold Snipers. The big absentee was Philipp Öttl, who broke his collarbone during testing and was hoping to have surgery today. The last one to win here from pole position was the great Marco Simoncelli in 125 in 2005.

On the second line was Nicholas Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) which achieved its best result last year in Jerez by obtaining second position. He rubbed shoulders Marcos Ramirez (for the Platinum Bay Real Estate team), a local rider if ever there was one because he was born a few kilometers from the circuit, in Conil de la Frontera, and second in the CEV Moto3 in 2016. Niccolo Antonelli completed the second row for Team Ajo, in complete discomfiture since the departure of Brad Binder and because of the technical superiority of the Hondas. The first Mahindra was thirteenth with Albert Arenas, and Jules Danilo twenty-fifth. In the manufacturers' standings, Honda totaled 75 points at the start of this Spanish Grand Prix, KTM 34, Mahindra and Peugeot 0. On a technical level, this summed up the start of the season quite well.

The air temperature was 27° and the air temperature was 32°. All the drivers chose a Dunlop medium at the rear as well as at the front, except Jules Danilo (soft front). At the start, the fastest to start was Jorge Martin, ahead of Romano Fenati, Aron Canet, Niccolo Antonelli, Marcos Ramirez, Darryn Binder and Joan Mir. Fenati took the lead at the end of the first lap, while Antonelli crashed with Suzuki in turn 6. Pagliani (CIP) was penalized for early departure.

Fenati preceded Binder, Martin, Ramirez, Mir, Canet, di Giannantonio and Bulega. Danilo was seventeenth. Binder set the best lap in 1'46.954 and took the lead ahead of Fenati, Ramirez, Mir and Canet. The leading group included 12 drivers.

Ramirez took command ahead of Fenati, Binder, Mir and Canet. Fenati regained first position. Vicente Perez fell without gravity. Ramirez won again ahead of Binder, Fenati, Mir, di Giannantonio, Canet and Bulega. Pagliani emerged thirtieth from the pits after his penalty ride through.

At 17 laps from the checkered flag, the two Platinum Bay Real Estate team drivers Ramirez and Binder led in front of Canet, Mir, Fenati, di Giannantonio, Bulega and Martin. Canet attempted a daring inside and was pushed around by Binder, thus losing five places. There were always twelve grouped at the front. Jules Danilo was fourteenth in the second peloton.

Ramirez was in perfect control in front of his teammate Binder, despite attacks from Mir, Fenati and Canet. Suddenly Darryn Binder fell without seriousness in the last corner while trying a daring outside on Fenati and left twenty-third. Fenati took the lead ahead of Ramirez, Canet, Mir, di Giannantonio and Migno. Romano Fenati was handicapped by a slightly loose fairing following contact with Binder (under investigation by the Race Direction).

McPhee fell without seriousness, while Bezzecchi (CIP) retired in his pit. There were 11 in the group of leaders, led by Ramirez ahead of Mir, Fenati, Canet and Migno. Martin was eighth rather towards the back of this group, with Bulega, Bastianini and Rodrigo.

Fenati took command with 6 laps remaining, ahead of Canet, Ramirez, Migno and Mir. The Italian then virtually took the lead in the World Championship with one point ahead of Mir. Ramirez regained first position, followed by Canet, Mir and Fenati. Danilo was thirteenth.

With three laps remaining, Fenati was narrowly ahead of Mir, Canet and Ramirez. Martin was tenth and last in the group of leaders, ahead of Bendsneyder and Danilo 5 seconds behind. The last corner of the last lap promised to be very hot!

Aron Canet finally won ahead of Fenati, Mir, Ramirez, di Giannantonio, Migno and Bulega. Danilo finished twelfth.
