Until the end of the 2015 season, MotoGP calipers were made of an Aluminum/Lithium alloy combining both lightness and mechanical strength. Roughly speaking, a stirrup of this type was 10% lighter and 5% stronger than a conventional stirrup, and had only one fault: it was expensive, very expensive!

Since 2016, Aluminum/Lithium calipers have therefore been prohibited, for cost reasons, and Brembo has revised its product range accordingly to offer very high quality “pure” aluminum MotoGP calipers. Externally, the differences are quite minimal and the over-sizing of the parts is only slightly visible.

In 2019, the teams still had the choice between two models, the one that we will call “normal” and which equips the vast majority of the field…

…as well as the one called “heavy duty”, be reinforced, particularly popular with Ducati and some KTMs. The latter only accepts “High Mass” pads while the first is more versatile by authorizing both “High Mass” and “normal” ones.

The situation had therefore barely changed until the first 2020 winter tests, in Valencia and Jerez, where the teams were invited to try a brand new model.

This one, easily recognizable, is distinguished by multiple cooling fins and by a significantly reduced mass: in fact, there is not much material left around the 4 pistons...

Will it be introduced into the range in 2020? Only Brembo knows, but it's a safe bet that we will see him again on February 7 in Sepang, during the first MotoGP 2020 test, if only to continue testing.

As a reminder, for the fourth consecutive season since the withdrawal of Nissin, the Bergamo company supplied all the teams in 2019. Since the introduction of the MotoGP category in 2002, all 315 races have been won by motorcycles equipped with brakes. Brembo. However, Brembo's victory in the championship dates back to 1995, and since that year all races have been won by motorcycles equipped with Italian brakes. Additionally, from 1978 to 2001, an additional 185 races were won by motorcycles equipped with Brembo brakes in the 500 category, reaching a total of 500 victories in more than 40 years of presence at the highest level of motorcycle racing.

Brembo is therefore the undisputed leader in MotoGP, but is not resting on its laurels...
