Born December 20, 1961 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Freddie spencer, nicknamed "Fast Freddie," is an American motorcycle racing legend, considered one of the most talented riders of the 80s, if not in the history of motorcycle racing thanks to his feat in 1985.
Having learned the ropes in dirt track and then in its national 250cc speed championship, Freddie spencer quickly attracted attention and was brought into the Honda AMA Superbike team at the age of 18. He racked up a few victories there and the following year even helped develop the exotic oblong-piston NR500. In 1982, he had his first full season in Grand Prix racing on the 500-cylinder NS3, during which he became the youngest winner in the history of the premier class at the age of 20 by winning at Spa, then in 1983 he became the youngest 500 World Champion after a fierce battle with Kenny roberts ! These two records would stand for almost thirty years, before being beaten by Marc Márquez in 2013.
1984 was marked by mechanical problems with the NSR500 V4 and injuries, but his moment of glory came in 1985 when he achieved a unique feat: winning the world championships in two classes, the 500cc and the 250cc, in the same season. This remains an unmatched record, a testament to his versatility and endurance.
He would declare years later: "I had a 3-year contract with Honda and as I had promised to win 3 titles, but I had missed the one in 1984, my only possibility was to win 2 in 1985!"
After the historic 1985 season, Spencer never won a Grand Prix again, paying a high price in his own flesh for the effort it took to achieve his feat. After retiring from Grand Prix racing and briefly returning to Superbike, Spencer set up a riding school before being inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2001. Appointed president of the FIM MotoGP stewards panel from 2019 to 2024, his aura will suffer, due to numerous incomprehensible and unexplained decisions.
But to celebrate the anniversary of the historic double title (250 and 500) of Freddie spencer in MotoGP in 1985, the Sunday Ride Classic will receive the American pilot as a special guest of honor at Paul Ricard on May 16/17, 2025.
Great friend of the event Sunday Ride Classic through which he returned to contact with the French public in 2013, Freddie spencer has chosen to celebrate its double title at the Circuit Paul Ricard on May 17 and 18, 2025.
Ticket office opens: February 14, 2025, Valentine's Day... for the love of motorcycling!!
