The reversals on the cessation of thermal engines in 2035 are increasing in Brussels, where the Transport Commission of the European Union has requested a modification of the Fit package for 55 measures, coming out in favor of an ecological transition taking into account a mix of technological solutions and not for the pure and simple banning of thermal engines.

A considerable change of course, even compared to just a few weeks ago, when the date set as an objective by the EU for the transition to 100% electric mobility seemed unavoidable. In committee, the opinion was approved by 27 votes for, 14 against and 7 abstentions. The text of the document, which is an opinion and will therefore still have to face a long process, provides that from 2035, newly registered vehicles must reduce emissions by 90% and no more than 100%: an objective to which the Manufacturers believe they can also achieve this with thermal engines, powered by new generation fuels: e-fuels, or synthetic fuels.

Concretely, the decision-making process in this matter will still be long. Indeed, the Environment Commission, which is responsible for this matter, must first express its opinion on the subject. Then it will be necessary to negotiate with the entire Commission, finally it will come to the vote in plenary. The electricity at all costs front, however, gave a first significant sign of failure to which the international situation created in the last period, starting with the dependence on Russian gas for the production of electricity and the awareness of the role of China in the control of the raw materials necessary for the manufacture of batteries.

Furthermore, European organizations are increasingly convinced of the need to take into account the entire life cycle of cars, from production to destruction and recycling, when calculating emissions.
